Is another artist getting ready to step into country music?
These days, it feels like everyone is trying to enter the country music space. From Lana Del Rey to BeyoncĂ©, Post Malone and more, pop and mainstream artists are running to country music to try and get into the action. With the kind of national success acts like Morgan Wallen, Zach Bryan and Luke Combs have had as of late, it’s not exactly a surprise… country music is BIG right now.
While I personally could do without pop artists entering the scene just to cash a check (looking at you Lana), I can’t call all the shots. This crossover, though, was one that I was not expecting whatsoever.
Machine Gun Kelly, recently shortened to just mgk, might be teasing his entrance to country music. Spotify House, which takes over Ole Red during CMA week, teased a couple days ago that mgk might appear on the stage. The official Spotify House at CMA Fest 2024 playlist briefly changed the cover image to a pixelated picture of mgk, which was later updated to a non-pixelated image but has since been removed in favor of Thomas Rhett.
But then, mgk himself basically confirmed his appearance responding to someone on Twitter:

And since then, Spotify House released their schedule confirming that he will in fact be performing Friday night (well, Saturday morning) at 12:30am, right after another unannounced surprise guest:

So does this mean mgk is going to make a crossover into country music? He of course got his start in hip hop, but then transitioned into more of a punk rock sound with his last two albums, so why not try country next? That being said, I would be more than shocked if mgk actually came out with the news of an any kind of country music project. To be honest, I have no idea why mgk is even on the bill during CMA Fest… but once again, I don’t call the shots.
We have seen mgk support his friend Jelly Roll at the Grand Ole Opry, so maybe he will jump on stage with Jelly (or maybe Jelly Roll is that 11:30 pm surprise performance).
Only time will tell if this is another crossover announcement… stay tuned.
Machine Gun Kelly jamming out to some Jelly Roll was not on my bingo card for the year. https://t.co/XL5j2DwjOM pic.twitter.com/6DLyYHtyGW
