Is this the greatest song about karaoke (not necessarily karaoke song) that’s ever been produced?
Good luck finding a song that’s more fun than “Too Drunk To Karaoke” by Jimmy Buffett and Toby Keith. Obviously, watching the hilarious music video now is a little bittersweet since the world has lost both Buffett and the “Big Dog Daddy,” but don’t let that get you down too much.
Jimmy and Toby wouldn’t want you to get sad watching this music video… they’d likely want you to get drunk. Buffett and Keith dropped this song in 2013 as a part of Jimmy’s album Songs from St. Somewhere. It may not have rocketed up the charts when it was released, but it still deserves a lot more credit than it got, especially when it comes to the accompanying music video.
Though the “Jimmy Buffett piece” might not have fit perfectly into the puzzle that is country music, he always enjoyed working with country artists. He did so most notably with Alan Jackson, when the pair teamed up to drop the day drinking banger that is “It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.” And for “Too Drunk To Karaoke,” Buffett asked if Toby Keith could help him out, and Keith happily obliged.
This track fits perfectly into either artist’s catalogue. Drinking too much at a karaoke bar? Who better to cover that topic than Buffett and the Big Dog Daddy? You can tell by watching the music video that they had a lot of fun with the song. And they perfectly created a chaotic and energetic vibe that would certainly come with getting too drunk before your called up for your selected song, then getting thrown out because you butchered the performance.
Honestly, if we can all have half as much fun this summer (and drink about the same amount of large, over-the-top drink as the main character in the music video) as they did in this music video, I think we’d all be happy. Maybe this is your sign to go out and (responsibly) get a little too tipsy at a karaoke bar this sometime soon.
Until then, you’ll just have to watch Toby Keith and Jimmy Buffett do it instead:
