The second single from Leavin’ This Holler.
49 Winchester once again laid down solid gold in the studio with this one. Today, the band, hailing from Castlewood, Virginia, dropped a new single, “Fast Asleep,” from their forthcoming album Leavin’ This Holler.
The new single is a perfect follow-up to their lead-off track, “Yearin’ For You,” as lead single Isaac Gibson wrestles with thoughts of letting down a lover. The repetition of the line notes how the “sun don’t shine,” followed by actions that could lead to a fight or separation, shows how much he lives to please his partner and hates seeing when they are upset.
“Well, the sun don’t shine when I let you down
And all my pride goes down the drain
But the sun sure shines on that little gal of mine
When I see just how far that we came…”
Through the ups and downs, though, he finds peace each night when he finds her “Fast Asleep” in their bed.
“And you’re fast asleep
And you’re fast asleep
And you’re fast asleep
Honey, beside me.”
The melancholy melodies that start the track and the tenderly sung lyrics show the hurt that he is potentially facing. As the lyrics lead up to the chorus, the melody builds, sounding like the clouds parting in the sky to reveal a sunny ending, giving the chorus an anthemic feel. During the second verse, you can hear the addition of an orchestra, giving the melodies so much depth. 49 noted during the announcement of their forthcoming album that it would feature appearances by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and you can hear that loud and proud on this track.
This second single shows the dynamic sound of the group. As “Yearnin’ For You” leaned into a honky tonk love song feel, “Fast Asleep” shows their slower heartbreak ballad talent. 49 was not kidding when they noted that this album showcased:
“The biggest and best 49 sound yet.”
If this track doesn’t get you fired up for what else is in store for Leavin’ This Holler, I’m not sure what will. August 2nd can’t come fast enough.
