Marcus King Unleashes Most Vulnerable Songwriting Of His Career With New Album, ‘Mood Swings’

Mood Swings is HERE.

Marcus King teamed up with the legendary Rick Rubin for his latest project, and this is a remarkable piece of work. King opened up during that album’s announcement that this album was a healing project after a tumultuous relationship.

At the time in his life, he was in a toxic relationship cycle, struggling with substance abuse and his mental health

The culmination of it all put him in a dark space where he was ready to exit this world, but through a new relationship (who would later become his wife) and leaning into songwriting as a form of therapy, King is now in a better headspace and is leaving all his demons in the past on this album.

“Without this assembly of songs, I don’t think I’d be around. I hope this album can act as a safety blanket, a rescue, or a refuge for anybody struggling with mental health, substance abuse, or relationship issues. That’s what it is for me.”

King spent a lot of time working with Rubin, seeing him as a world-class producer and musical mentor.

In the early summer of 2020 I arrived at Shangri-La for my first meeting with my hero, the legend, Mr. Rick Rubin. As soon as Rick & I met it was like a spark in the room! I immediately felt welcomed, appreciated and mutually admired.”

Combining their minds leads to an extraordinary end product with this album. King takes a step away from his Southern rock and honky tonk-inspired sound and leans more into the soulful side of his melodies. As someone who usually likes to be behind the guitar, letting his talent shine, he puts the strings on the backseat, allowing his vocals and lyrics to be the focal of this album. It’s new and different from King, but that shows his true artistry, expanding on a sound and creating a new chapter of his career.

The album, from top to bottom, tells the story, priming listeners with the high highs and low lows they will hear from the title track, “Mood Swings.” Each track highlights a different facet of emotions and the feelings of being wrapped up in something toxic for you.

From “Save Me,” he acknowledges feeling like he is trapped to a lighter song like “Delilah,” where you have a love so strong you need to find your back to them; the tracklist covers a wide array of emotions.

Marcus King exceeded my expectations with this project. While it’s easy to find tracks anyone will love from this record,  I can tell this is the kind of album you find more and more in common with as it sits with you longer. Marcus pulled back the veil and laid down some of his most honest songwriting here, leading to a stellar end product.

Check out some early favorites.
