A perfect choice.

Kacey Musgraves is officially sending her song “The Architect” to country radio as the second single from her fifth studio album Deeper Well, which was just released this past Friday.

It was the immediate standout to me, and I have, quite literally, had it on repeat all weekend long. Written by Kacey along with Shane McAnally and Josh Obsorne, who are her co-writers on her hit single and all-around incredible song, “Merry Go ‘Round,” it’s an absolute stunner.

Those three always make magic together, and while Kacey has a complicated history with country radio, to put it mildly, I think this song has so much potential and should be a #1 hit (though I’m not holding my breathe):

The song finds Kacey tackling some deep subject matter in terms of the universe and how we all got here, where she marvels at simple creations like an apple:

“Even something as small as an apple
It’s simple and somehow complex
Sweet and divine, the perfect design
Can I speak to the architect?”

She continues, questioning whether everything in life was meticulously designed by God, wanting to see the “blueprints and plans” for everything because of how beautiful and confusing it can all be:

“I thought that I was too broken
And maybe too hard to love
I was in a weird place, then I saw the right face
And the stars and the planets lined up

Does it happen by chance? Is it all happenstance?
Do we have any say in this mess?
Is too late to make some more space?
Can I speak to the architect?
This life that we make, is it random or fate?
Can I speak to the architect?
Is there an architect?”

Once again, it’s a pretty daring single to send to country radio, and reminds me a lot of her debut “Merry Go ‘Round” in terms of just how meaningful, and different, it is for that platform. I think it’s a simply brilliant song, and like I said in my initial post about the album, I would not be surprised to see this on nominated for a Grammy down the road.

She always seems to push the boundaries in such an honest and authentic way, and while early in her career, that was not really rewarded at radio (aside from when “Merry Go ‘Round” cracked the Top 10), I’m hoping it might be different this time around… not that she needs it, Kacey’s a superstar anyways at this point, but she definitely deserves it.

Kacey is also sending “Cardinal” to U.S. Triple A (alternative) radio, proving the crossover potential for Deeper Well as a whole:

I’m serious when I tell you, I can’t get enough…
