Folks, Selection Sunday is (*checks watch) only 16 days away.

Yes, I have a reminder set on my phone, and a countdown app to let me know how many days are left until the most beautiful weekend in sports. The key to happiness is to always have something to look forward to, and the next thing on my list is March Madness.

Christmas is often affectionally referred to as the most wonderful time of the year, but if you asked me, I’d say March Madness is right there with it. Plus, you get the Masters right after the NCAA championship game in April. I usually have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming during those couple of weeks.

One of the highlights of last year’s madness in the month of March was the first round matchup between the 4-seeded Virginia Cavaliers and the 13-seeded Furman Paladins. Virginia has gotten comfortable earning a high seed in the tournament and exiting early, most famously being the first 1-seed to lose to a 16-seed in 2018.

In their defense, they bounced back the following year and won the whole damn thing in 2019, but unfortunately, history will probably remember their upsets more than their triumphs. That’s just how life seems to work, if you haven’t already noticed.

And last year, that trend of the Cavaliers losing early was alive and well. They went down to Furman in the first round of the NCAA tournament, and the call of the closing moments of the game were nothing short of electric. Kevin Harlan, Stan Van Gundy, and Dan Bonner were on the call, and Gundy and Bonner made sure to get out of the way when Harlan emphatically commentated that chaotic conclusion. It was either that, or they were just so stunned by what was happening that they were left speechless when Furman stole the ball and hit a clutch three-pointer to win.

Harlan’s call perfectly matched the moment, as he yelled:

“Did we just see what we think we just saw?”

Holy smokes, I can’t wait for that kind of action in a couple of weeks. That right there is what March Madness is all about. Virginia is currently projected to make the tournament, so make sure to make a fun, responsible bet against them before the games tip off.

And while we are speaking of betting, some on social media thought that Stan Van Gundy reacted the way he did in that above video because he might have had “a little something” on the Cavaliers:
