Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes Covers Blaze Foley’s “Clay Pigeons,” Calls It A “Masterpiece From One Of The True Outlaws Of Country Music”

Out of all the songs I would’ve expected Luke Grimes to cover, this probably wouldn’t have even made my list.

But I absolutely love it.

The Yellowstone star we all know and love as Kayce Dutton is gearing up to release his debut country album with UMG Nashville, and today, he shared a fantastic cover of Blaze Foley’s “Clay Pigeons” as an Amazon exclusive.

Of course, Foley is an iconic country music singer-songwriter who grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and was close friends with the great Townes Van Zandt.

Luke noted on Instagram how much the song means to him personally, adding that it’s a “masterpiece of a song from one of the true outlaws of country music”:

“The good folks at @amazonmusic gave me an opportunity to cover one of my favorite songs of all time for their amazon originals series.

‘Clay Pigeons’ by Blaze Foley. A masterpiece of a song from one of the true outlaws of country music.”

You might also recognize the tune from the late John Prine, who covered it on his Grammy-winning 2005, 15th studio album Fair & Square.

And I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but Luke truly seems to have a deep and authentic appreciate for real country music, and this just further proves that in my opinion:

You can hear a clip of the cover below, and listen to the full thing on Amazon music (which you can get access to if you have a Prime account, and I think most of us do these days):

Luke previously noted legends like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson as musical inspirations, and he has released three singles from his forthcoming (yet unofficially announced) album so far, including “No Horse To Ride,” “Oh Ohio,” and most recently, “Hold On.”

And make sure you stay tuned for more, because it’s likely the official album announcement will be coming very soon, as Luke just made his headlining live show debut last week.
