Luke Combs is gearing up to release a brand new album this month.
His fourth studio album Gettin’ Old will be out everywhere on March 24th, and includes 18 songs in total, right around seven months since the release of his 3rd career studio album Growin’ Up was released.
Leading up to release day, he’s been sharing the inspiration behind some of the songs on the tracklist, and today, Luke shared a really cool story about how he came up with the idea for “See Me Now.”
Though we likely won’t get to hear it until the full project is out, Luke said in a post on social media that his dad’s dad, his Pap Pap, told him he would “make it” one day if he stuck with the whole music thing, adding that the conviction with which he said it “stuck with him forever.”
Safe to say, he couldn’t have been more right…
And his mom’s dad, his Grandpa Jim, fostered his love of racing from a young age, and Luke says he would’ve been his biggest fan now, adding that he only wished he could’ve been alive to see him perform at the Daytona 500 two years in a row.
He also shared a really sweet picture with both of them when he was a little boy, and this one’s at the top of my list now of songs from this record I’m really looking forward to hearing:
“These are my grandpas. The one on the left of the photo was my dad’s dad, Pap Pap. When I started doing music, he told me, ‘If you stick with this, you’re gonna make it.’ I thought he had lost his mind, but he said it with such conviction that I almost believed him and that moment stuck with me forever.
He passed away in 2016, but thankfully my 1st album ‘This One’s for You’ was already finished by then and I played it for him the last time I got to see him. Unfortunately that’s as far as he saw my music career go. The one on the right is my Mom’s dad, Grandpa Jim.
We spent so many Sunday’s together watching races, cooking breakfast, telling dirty jokes, and driving Grandma crazy. He passed away in 2011 and never got to see me pick up a guitar or sing a song but I know he’d be my biggest fan if he was still with us, especially when I got to play at the Daytona 500 two years in a row.
The reason I tell y’all all this is because they were the inspiration for my song ‘See Me Now’ – where I kind of get to tell these stories a little bit and tell them some things they never got to see happen. I miss you both like crazy and I like to think you’d both be proud of the man I’ve become.”
And the picture is absolutely precious:
Luke has already put out three singles from the record, “Love You Anyway,” the lead single “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old,” and most recently, the longtime fan-favorite “Joe.”
He revealed the full tracklist a few weeks ago, which also includes a cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” in addition to an Eric Church co-write called “My Song Will Never Die.”
The next pre-released single fans will get to hear drops on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, which is “5 Leaf Clover.”
