Bundle up folks, it’s about to be a cold winter but Flatland Cavalry is keeping us warm…

The easy on the ears, heavy on the heart band from Lubbock, Texas, took to Instagram this morning to let the world know their next project was coming this Friday, October 28th.

Titled Songs To Keep You Warm, it will be a 6-song EP with features from front-man Cleto Cordero’s wife Kaitlyn Butts and Ashley Monroe.

The post also contained a small instrumental sampling of one of those to be released songs, “Damaged Goods”.

Produced by Bruce Robinson at The Bunker in Lockhart, Texas, this will be the group’s first studio project since their fantastic 2021 album Welcome To Countryland, which along with being absolutely one of the best records released last year, had for my money an absolutely top tier album cover which I need to get framed an hung on my wall.

Cleto Cordero shares:

“An idea came to me in June, out of the blue, late one evening at bedtime after a very long and wearisome few weeks on the road.

I was in the kinda place where I was completely exhausted, both mentally and physically, and laying there in a state of surrender, the entire idea for this EP just flashed into my mind: The studio and producer, the songs, and the theme ‘Songs To Keep You Warm.’

Historically, we have never announced a fall project, so I am excited to release a curated batch of songs that, I believe, pair well with the season of chilly overcast days, falling leaves and all things pumpkin-spiced.

I hope these songs are something fans will cling to during the colder months—something to keep them warm until spring arrives!”

The first track of the project was released in late August.

Titled “Mountain Song”, it’s right at the heart of what we’ve come to expect from Flatland.

Pretty music and quality writing with plenty of heartstrings being tugged.

“Pine tree campfire
End of the night
Embers burnin’
Shedding new light
Bottle of Blanton’s
Got me feelin’ right
Mountain, mountain
Keep me company tonight…”

Absolutely love the Blanton’s callout, which is made at Buffalo Trace distillery, which is one of my favorites.

While I can’t say I’m really looking forward to cold weather, it’s nice to know there’s going to be some warming music to get me through.
