NASCAR Xfinity Series: Ty Gibbs & Sam Mayer Trade Punches At Martinsville

WILD night at Martinsville.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series put on one helluva show tonight at Martinsville Speedway with Brandon Jones ultimately taking the checkered flag.

Landon Cassill took second and AJ Allmendinger finished third, but it was Ty Gibbs and Sam Mayer that garnered the most attention following the race.

Ty Gibbs was leading the pack for a number of laps in the 3rd stage, but in the final lap, contact with Sam Mayer sent Gibbs into the wall. After the race, Gibbs smashed into Mayer during the cool-down lap, and all bets were off after that.

Gibbs approached Mayer who removed his helmet and threw a few shoves, while Gibbs took a page outta the Kevin Harvick playbook and left the helmet on.

Punches were thrown… and landed:

Mayer, who definitely ate a few good punches, shared his thoughts on the scrap:

“$100,000 grand on the line, put the bumper to him because that’s is what short track races is all about. He got upset… so whatever he threw a couple punches but  they were pretty weak so can’t say much about that, it’s kind of funny.

He’s been doing that to everyone else every week so far…”

Mayer addressed the helmet issue as well:

“It’s kind of funny because he walked up to me, I had my helmet off already, and he kept his helmet on, so obviously he was scared about something or he had it in his mind to throw a punch the whole time.

That’s on him not me… I’m fine, I couldn’t care less. I’m gonna move on and race everybody just as hard.”

Mayer was sporting quite the shiner on the upper right eyebrow.

Here’s another angle of the tilt:

Big congrats to Brandon Jones on the victory.

The Xfinity Series continues April 23rd at Talladega Superspeedway.
