If you’ve been sleepin’ on Kacey Musgraves’ Christmas originals, it’s time to change that.

In 2016, she released her beautiful holiday album A Very Kacey Christmas, and followed it up with a TV special in 2019 called The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show.

The TV special included guest appearances by artists like Troye Sivan, Camila Cabello and Lana Del Rey, and was hosted by the hilarious Dan Levy. Filled with color, glitter, Christmas classics and quite a few Kacey originals, it’s a must-watch every holiday season for me.

Aside from the amazing outfits and fun bits between Kacey and Dan throughout the show, it got me thinking recently about how many good original Christmas songs she has.

We talk a lot about how bad Christmas music can be (and it’s true), but she has some of the best in my opinion and we don’t talk about it enough.

She’s a co-writer on all of them, which is pretty obvious in that they’re full of the interesting, fresh lyrics we’ve come to expect from Kacey with totally unique concepts in terms of Christmas topics. I swear, I could listen to her pure, angelic voice all day long no matter what she’s singing, though.

Along with the release of the show two years ago, she put out a song with Troye called “Glittery,” where she compares the love she feels for a man to the glitter and lights that make the Christmas season such a beautiful time of year:

She actually co-wrote “Present Without A Bow” with Leon Bridges (as well as Luke Laird and Austin Jenkins) who’s also featured on the track, and she makes the point that we should focus on slowing down and enjoying the holiday magic before it’s all over so soon:

A sad country song that’s also a Christmas song? Sign me up.

Lastly, you need to check out her original song “Ribbons And Bows”. It’s my absolute favorite, and it’s one of the only Christmas songs I can pretty much listen to on a loop without going into full-on Grinch mode:
