When the bison get to fighting in Yellowstone National Park, everyone should yield and stay out of the way.
Tourists heading out west to one of our nation’s most famous national parks often wish to see something memorable while they are there. For anyone in the vicinity of this bison feud, that wish was granted. It’s not everyday that you see two massive beasts get in a battle that sends them quite literally flying across a roadway.
And fortunately for us, Kent Stucky – a wildlife photographer in the Wyoming area – was there to capture this on camera.
Fully grown male bison stand at 6 feet tall and can weigh around 2,000 pounds at their heaviest, which if you don’t know, is a full ton. So when these one-ton creatures go at one another, it is truly a heavy-weight match up. And catching two going at each other is more likely to happen during mating season, while male bison want to show their female counterparts that they are “tough enough” and worthy to be a romantic partner.
This video in particular appears to be taken in just the past couple of days actually takes place outside of the typical mating season for bison, which runs from June through September.
So there’s no telling what kind of beef these two bison had with one another, but they were both bringing the aggression and the power in this unbelievable battle that was caught on camera. The two massive bison were locked into a horn-swinging feud, and it was honestly an even matchup. Neither male was able to get the best of the other, which is why I feel comfortable calling it a deadlock.
Just when one of the beasts seemed to get the best of the other bison, the tides turn and the bison on the losing side flips the script and showcases its strength. It’s a fascinating, give-and-take fiasco that stirs up dust and showcases their brute strength. I can only imagine how excited Kent Stucky was to get it on camera.
I’ve got to say… the wildlife photographer did a great job with the caption for this fight video:
“A differing of opinions.”
There’s certainly something that those bison couldn’t agree on.
Thanks goodness all of the vehicles on that Yellowstone roadway saw the tornado of bison messily spinning towards the asphalt and kept their distance. They were clearly too engrossed in their fight to care about what was around them, and could have easily done some damage. For once… all of the tourists in Yellowstone actually kept their distance (there’s plenty of examples of them not doing so… believe me).
Social media users were mesmerized by the video that Stucky shared, and made a couple of jokes and observations about the footage out of Yellowstone National Park:
“They crossed the street without looking both ways.”
“I wouldn’t want to try to break up that spat.”
“Talk about road rage.”
“Rutting season without a doubt.”
“All I know is I wouldn’t want to be in their path.”
You could say that again…
