Well, I never could’ve guessed that one…
Eric Church released his song “Some of It” as the second single from his 2018 sixth studio album Desperate Man, which he wrote with Jeff Hyde, Clint Daniels, and Bobby Pinson.
It ultimately became his 8th #1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, and even became a very minor crossover hit, peaking at #43 US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was also nominated for Best Country Song at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, and it remains a fan-favorite song to this day.
The lyrics are of course heartfelt and nostalgic, and one of the writer’s, Bobby Pinson, appeared on the Brother’s Hunt podcast this week, where he told the story of how the song was written, and it’s even crazier than you can imagine.
Pinson has penned hits like Sugarland’s “Want To,” ” All I Want to Do” Toby Keith’s “Made in America” and Morgan Wallen’s “Me + All Your Reasons,” and he says the makings of “Some Of It” started out with him having maybe a little too much fun at Nashville bar Loser’s.
He still showed up to his write the next day, though he was of course hurting from the night before:
“I was at Loser’s, you could say 10 years ago, 12, whatever it was. I was at Loser’s, because it was Monday night and one in the morning… but I don’t know if you’ve ever been so drunk that you pooped your pants… I didn’t, but had I had pants on… My points is, I had a night, and I was writing with Clint Daniels the next morning, and Jeff Hyde, and I love those people.
There’s all kinds of ways to do it, but at the end of the day, you write songs you love with people you love, and God does the rest. I showed up, and Clint’s a much better player than me because his fingers are skewed. I love that, but I was dealing with a bit of a delicate constitution from the night before, had to potty, and so I was like, ‘Keep going, man.’
Pinson left to go to the restroom, but he left the door open… and they continued writing while he did his business, so to speak.
They wound up writing the beginning of the song that way and the rest, as they say, is history:
“And he left his door open, and I left my door open across the hall, and he was more mad about my door being open than he was his. But I come out of there with the first part of lyrics that were nominated for a Grammy.
People say, where do songs come from? This one comes from the toilet.”
I guess you never know when inspiration will strike…
And I don’t think I’ll ever listen to it the same way:
