Luke Grimes Thought ‘Marshals’ Would Only Go One Season: “I Didn’t Want Get My Hopes Up”

Luke Grimes didn’t have a lot of faith that his Yellowstone spinoff would last longer than one season.

The Kayce Dutton-focused continuation of the Yellowstone story has already aired its first season, and didn’t take long at all to turnaround for Season 2. The first episode of the second season aired this past Sunday (October 4) on CBS, and while much of the spinoff’s early storyline revolved around Luke Grimes’ character moving on after the death of his wife, Monica, this season could see him move on with another love interest.

If you ask Luke Grimes, he’s just grateful that the show is moving forward with Season 2. When he spoke with the Hollywood Reporter, he admitted that, despite great ratings in the first season, he wasn’t confident that Marshals would move on after the inaugural run:

“To be completely honest, that’s what I thought was going to happen. (We’d only go one season). I really thought, ‘At least I don’t have to put him away just yet.’ I love playing Kayce. This has been the greatest character of my life, and here I am, nine years later, still playing him.

I didn’t want to get my hopes up, or have too much expectation. So I was like, if it’s just one season, it’s just one season, and it’ll be fun; I get to put the costume back on. And here we are — it looks like we’ll be doing it for a while.”

Yeah Luke Grimes… you should probably get comfortable in your Kayce Dutton garb (if you aren’t already).

The star of the spinoff says that he was really surprised just how much the Yellowstone fanbase followed over to Marshals. When he saw that fans were really responding to the show – especially through streaming – he felt a lot better about the chances of his CBS series going for multiple seasons:

“I think it was bigger than any of us expected, especially on the streaming side of things. Honestly, it felt really good that people showed up for it. I didn’t know how it was going to be received. I had reservations to begin with about continuing Kayce’s story and continuing it in a completely different format. I was a little nervous about that, and the fact that people showed up and watched it and kept watching it was very encouraging.”

Not only did they keep watching… they kept clamoring for more.

So now, it appears Grimes is once again in a show in the Yellowstone universe that could run for five-plus seasons. The actor and country music artist says that he’s not fully aware of showrunner Spencer Hudnut’s vision for the series – in terms of how long it could go on – but he’s happily taking it one season at a time, and would love to continue playing Kayce for as long as he can:

“I don’t know what his master plan is. We’ll talk about one season at a time. It is doing really well, so I would imagine that we’ll keep going. But we really don’t know until we get a season three pickup if there’s going to be a season three. You just have to take it a season at a time. I think if you start to think too long term, maybe you spread it a little thin, and if you just give everything you have to this season right now, then we’ll let what happens down the road figure itself out then…

As far as how long I want to do this, I’ve been acting so long that I know not to get my hopes up or try to project how long I’m going to do something. That’s so out of my hands.  All I can really do is be in the moment and do the work that’s in front of me right now. That’s how I’ve had to become over the years with so many disappointments and ups and downs. I have season two right now, and that’s sort of all I’m worried about.”

Here’s the trailer for Season 2, in case you need to get caught up:
