In the early days of Hootie & The Blowfish, Darius Rucker and the rest of the band happily accepted cases of beer as payment.
Rucker will always love the state of South Carolina. He’s a proud University of South Carolina graduate, and he’s lived in the “Palmetto State” for most of his life (specifically in the Charleston area… which is absolutely beautiful). That is until he moved to London, England in early 2025. He’s been quoted saying that his time there will be temporary, and that the Carolinas will always be home to him.
That’s because he feels like he owes a lot of his success to South Carolina, and all of that success got started when he and Hootie & The Blowfish formed while at the University of South Carolina. While sitting down with Bussin’ with the Boys, Rucker spoke about the early days of the band, and how they would play frat houses and accept… let’s just say multiple forms of payment:
“Money and beer. It was probably that Dave Matthews show we played for the frat house, we probably got $1,000 and all the beer we could drink.”
Frat houses and unlimited beer do go together quite well, don’t they?
The frontman of Hootie & The Blowfish (who is not Hootie, by the way) went on to say that, for their first 10 to 15 gigs, they played for cases of beer – and increased the necessary case count as they became more and more popular. The only issue? Beer didn’t pay for a public address system, so they had to improvise:
“When we first got started, absolutely. Our first probably 10 gigs, 15 gigs, were strictly for beer.
We had to steal the PA from the university because we couldn’t afford a PA. I was in a show choir, and we had our own PA, and the guy who was in charge of it was a friend of mine. So we’d steal the PA, take it to the club and play it. Then take the PA back.”
It’s funny how things work out sometimes.
Darius Rucker often looks back on that time of his life, and wonders what his life would look like now if he hadn’t gone to South Carolina for school:
“That’s why I love South Carolina. Stuff like that. If I hadn’t gone to South Carolina, my life would be absolutely different.”
Wonder if Hootie & The Blowfish would still play a show for some beer, for old time’s sake?
I’d have to imagine they’d be negotiating for pallets of beer rather than cases at this point. And in case you missed the news, it wasn’t too long ago that Rucker talked about his own retirement nearing, and how before he rides off into the sunset, he’d like to get Hootie back together for one last hoorah. He knows the perfect place for he and Hootie and the Blowfish’ finale:
“If we call it, I’ve got to do one more Hootie thing. We have to finish at Williams-Brice Stadium. Our last show, when we say we’re done, it’s gotta be at Williams-Brice Stadium (in South Carolina).”
You heard him South Carolina and Williams-Brice Stadium… start getting the beer payments ready.
