This jumping, wild moose in Wyoming was a horrible role model for this herd of horses.
Have you ever heard of Wilson, Wyoming? The city is only 7 miles or so from the Yellowstone tourist town known as Jackson Hole, and it’s where this video takes place. Like the famous Jackson Hole area, Wilson is home to a diverse collection of wildlife like elk, bison, pronghorn, grizzly bears and black bears, and even the mighty moose.
I’ve got a feeling the owner of the horses in this video wishes that moose would mind their own business and stop hopping fences… and giving the horses ideas.
In case you didn’t know, moose are the largest of all deer in the deer family, and their height and weight might surprise you. Males are typically bigger than females, but both are still larger than you might think. On average, a female moose usually stands at 5 to 7 feet tall at their shoulders, and can weigh anywhere from 800 to 1,500 pounds.
In other words, that’s almost a ton (with antlers) walking around.
Despite their size, and the big ol’ antlers the males carry on the top of their heads (typically weighing 40 to 50 pounds on their own), the creatures are still very agile. Adult moose have been observed running as fast as 35 miles per hour in short bursts, and when it comes to jumping, they can easily clear obstacles that are six to eight feet tall.
Granted, moose themselves are about that tall, so it’s not that tall of a task for them to hurdle. But it’s believed that, if a moose really needed to, it could even give a 10-foot obstacle a real run for its money. In this video below, the Wyoming moose didn’t even need to showcase its leaping skills. It casually kind of stepped over the fencing that was keeping the horses in place, and the long-faced animals could hardly believe what they were seeing:

Horses are obviously also gifted when it comes to jumping. However, it appears this herd has never entertained the thought of jumping the fencing like this moose did. Social media users that have come across the now viral video have really gotten a kick out of the clip, and have left plenty of comical observations and comments like these below the post:
“Discovering free will exists and they can, in fact, just jump.”
“Those horses are asking, ‘Is that legal?'”
“He didn’t jump the fence. He simply stepped over it.”
“Naw they’re saying, ‘Look he ain’t smart, he’s leaving all this free hay and oats.'”
“Giving the horses some ideas.”
“The horses are like, “I don’t think you are supposed to do that.'”
“Thinking outside of the box.”
“Horses are like, ‘I… I didn’t know we could do that?'”
“Unreal, great work capturing this.”
Isn’t that the truth? The video of the moose clearing the fence was entertaining in its own right… but panning over and showing a herd of horses appearing to be astounded by the fence-jumping is pure cinema.
