He’s made a career on the road, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Today, Eric Church released a new song called “On the Road,” which is a beautiful story about his life as a traveling musician and everything he’s gotten to do and see because of it. If you read Whiskey Riff you’ve probably already heard the live version, as Church debuted the studio version ahead of his night 3 show at Red Rocks back in July, playing the song before he took the stage.
The studio cut has a sort of heartland rock vibe in some of the production, maybe a little bit of Springsteen in there too, and Eric wrote it by himself, and it was produced by his longtime collaborator Jay Joyce. Throughout the song, Church works in mentions of some of his most memorable career moments, good and bad, as he reflects on the Route 91 Harvest Festival tragedy, as well as headlining Red Rocks and playing under the northern lights.
Eric says so much of life spent on the road blurs together, but the people and moments that stand out really shape who you are and the person you become. Often, when that’s your lifestyle, it can be hard to step back and really assess it, but when you do, you realize there’s a certain wanderlust that always keeps you wondering what’s down the road:
“There’s something about a life on the road where the miles start to blur together, yet the people and the moments never do.
Those are the things you carry with you. You realize how much of who you are was shaped somewhere between one town and the next, and maybe that’s why you never really stop wondering what’s waiting down the road.”
It’s really incredible to think about all he’s done in his career thus far, and Church also shouts out some of the greats like Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and George Strait, iconic artists who came before him and know the road life all too well:
“I’ve seen the devil stop a show in Vegas
I’ve seen those angels get their forever wings
I stood on stage with Kris and a Red-headed Stranger
And I’ve done the last show in Texas with the King
Livin’ my dreams I know
On the road I’ve come far
Rode in a thousand towns writing on my guitar
On the road they say it never ends
But I know one day I’ll do anything to do it all again
On the road”
Of course, like the ones before him, a day will eventually come that he veers off the road and another cowboy will “hear the call” and carry on the tradition:
“Lookin’ back you think it’d seem so long,
This winding path that I’ve been rollin’ on
But it’s just a moment in the life of a song
And a day will come when that’s all that carries on
Cause I’ll be just a name on the wall
And some other cowboy will hear the call”
It’s a beautiful song, I love an Eric Church solo write, and for me it feels more like a return to some of his earlier music in terms of the sound which I really love.
In fact, it’s been a little over a year since we got new music from Church, who dropped his latest album Evangeline vs. the Machine in May 2025. Chief has always been one to take his time between albums, so it’s exciting that he’s already back in the studio and dropping new music so soon after the last album.
There’s no word on whether or not this is the lead single from a bigger project or what might be coming next, but I have a feeling we might be getting even more new music as we start heading towards 2027. Stay tuned…
