Is there a more frightening scenario in the great outdoors? I don’t believe that there is.
I mean, you tell me… would you rather come face to face with a charging bear? An angry bull moose? A bison in an open field? I think I’m taking my chances with the moose or the bison every time.
Bears and big, strong, fast, powerful… these magnificent beasts come charging at you faster than you can possibly imagine, and while most of the time it’s just a bluff, you need to maintain an insane level of cool and collected if you’re going to have a shot at defending yourself. That is, if you even get the chance to protect yourself. Most of the time, the bear is on you before you can even understand what is going on.
Of course, whenever you’re in bear country, it is absolutely essential to have some bear spray. Doesn’t matter if you have a firearm or not (in bear country a firearm is probably recommended), it’s a non-negotiable to have your bear spray handy and ready to fire at a moment’s notice.
As you can see in this heart-pounding video, a gun isn’t always the answer.
The man is speaking Russian, though it’s unclear exactly where he’s hunting. He appears to be bird hunting, as suggested by his side-by-side shotgun, meaning it’s likely loaded with birdshot—far from ideal for stopping a bear. On top of that, he only has two rounds at his disposal.
Luckily for him and his big brass ones, those two shots weren’t necessary. The hunter remained remarkably composed as a mother bear, accompanied by her three cubs, bluff charged him not once, not twice, but three times. The hunters had dogs with them, which may have alerted them to the bear’s presence—or possibly aggravated it. Yet, each time the furious mother bear charged, the hunter held his ground, refusing to fire too soon.
Even as the bear closed in within just a few yards, he stayed patient, knowing that with birdshot, he’d need to wait until the very last moment to maximize its effectiveness. Luckily, the bear veered off each time, and the hunter never had to pull the trigger. Credit where it’s due this guy has nerves of absolute STEEL. It’s extremely impressive, clearly he is an experienced outdoorsman.
Not his first rodeo…
