Well that’s one way to handle the backlash.
Before podcasts, this whole conversation would have been contained to a girl’s trip, or a girl’s night out. But now? Matthew Stafford’s wife Kelly gets to talk about how she messed around with a guy other than the Detroit Lions quarterback in college and the whole world gets to chime in and roast her.
Kelly was a guest on the Off The Vine podcast recently, and during her appearance, her and the pod’s host Kaitlyn Bristowe spoke about how Kelly and Matthew Stafford got together. The two have been a couple since Stafford’s standout days at the University of Georgia, but it’s apparently not a seamless “college sweethearts” story.
At one point, Kelly and Matthew weren’t together, and she did something pretty devious to make him jealous:
“Wasn’t that cute of a relationship at first. I hated him. I loved him. I dated the backup to piss him off, which worked.
He was the bad boy too. Matthew is so sweet and ‘southern gentleman’ and all that stuff and the backup was the complete opposite.”
@offthevinepodcast Well… It worked 🤣🤣 Tune in to hear how Kelly shares dating the back-up QB made @matthewstafford come running back ! 🫶🏼 SPOILER ALERT: they’re married now!! 🤍 #football #datinglife #podcastclips @kaitlynbristowe @kellyandhank ♬ original sound – Off The Vine
Yikes.
Well naturally the internet had a field day with the admission, roasting Kelly for putting that story out there in the first place – but also trying to figure out who she was talking about.
There were two main suspects. The internet narrowed the backup QB down to either Joe Cox, or Logan Gray.
And now I think we can confidently say that it was Gray she was referring to, because Kelly took to the internet to apologize for her comments.
Oh, she didn’t apologize to her husband, if that’s what you thought. No, she apologized to Cox and his wife for making the internet think that he was the one she was messing around with.
In a post on her Instagram story, Kelly confirmed that it wasn’t Cox she was talking about:
“To this beautiful fam…
I am sorry for the media storm that happened last week that made its way into your lives. You had ZERO involvement in what I spoke about and in fact, it was y’alls relationship in college that I looked up to and wanted for me and Matthew.
You were the couple that everyone thinks Matthew and I was…y’all were the UGA QB and cheerleader that met and never let go.
I love y’all.”
🚨NEWS: Matthew Stafford's wife, Kelly, apologized to the family of former backup Joe Cox on IG, after her story of sleeping with a “backup” went viral.
Kelly made it clear that it was not Cox who she had a relationship with. https://t.co/zwUuDYsKDd pic.twitter.com/28Y03H9cDE
