Hotter than a two-dollar pistol.

On Tuesday, an all-star lineup came out to Huntsville, Alabama for Still Playin’ Possum: Music and Memories of George Jonesto honor the country music icon on the 10-year anniversary of his death.

The star-studded tribute featured performances of some of Possum’s biggest hits from names like Jamey Johnson, Tracy Byrd, Tanya Tucker, Justin Moore, Lorrie Morgan, Dierks Bentley, Wynonna, Jelly Roll, and a ton of others.

But one of the highlights of the night was this rockin’ performance by Tracy Lawrence and “The Fiddle Man” Tim Watson, who paid tribute to George Jones with their version of “The One I Loved Back Then (The Corvette Song).”

Released in 1985 as the second single from his album Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes, the song peaked at #3 on the charts but quickly became a staple of Jones’ live shows later in his career.

And it’s one that Tracy Lawrence often covers in his own shows in tribute to his legendary friend.

This one’s always been one of my favorite George Jones songs. And Tracy manages to do the song justice, giving it a cover that I’m sure would make the Possum proud.

And it looks like they had a hell of a good time doing it.

Jamey Johnson Performs Jaw-Dropping Cover Of “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes”

While there were a ton of incredible performances at the tribute show on Tuesday, Jamey Johnson set the bar high from the very beginning.

Jamey opened the show with a jaw-dropping cover of Jones’ 1985 hit “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes,” a song that mourns the irreplaceable legends of country music like Waylon, Willie and Johnny Cash. It’s a refrain that’s often used today as country music has strayed more and more from its traditional roots:

“Who’s gonna fill their shoes?Who’s gonna stand that tall?Who’s gonna play the OpryAnd the Wabash cannonball?Who’s gonna give their heart and soulTo get to me and you?Lord, I wonder who’s gonna fill their shoes”

Well obviously George Jones is another one whose shoes nobody will ever be able to fill. But when it comes to incredible voices in traditional country music, there’s nobody better than Jamey Johnson to step up and fill the void left by the loss of so many legends.

Luckily we have guys like him to keep the sound of real country music alive and well.

Gotta think the Possum would be proud of this one.
