Everyone is welcome at a Kacey Musgraves show.
The native Texan has never been shy about voicing her left-leaning political opinions, and she’s spoken out quite a lot at her shows this year, and online as well.
Fans know that it’s nothing new, though, and she’s been like that since she started her career, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want all of her fans to feel welcome at her concerts. During a show this weekend at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, Kacey took some time to acknowledge how much her fans have supported her this year and how thankful she is that all of the ladies in country music have had such a great year.
She explained that even though women in entertainment are often pitted against each other, “it ain’t gonna work” on them, and I’m here for it:
“It’s been really bad*** to see women have such an amazing year in country music. They’re gonna try their hardest to pit us against each other, but it ain’t gonna work. Really, who has time for that s***? Everybody is doing their own thing, you know? But the love that you guys have brought this whole era, this tour, this record, I can’t tell you what it means to me.
Each and every single person in here, even if I can’t physically see you, you’re part of this. For real. I mean it. Just in general, people connecting to country music right now says a lot about where we are. People are really wanting simplicity and real songs about real s***.
And I’ve been singing country music since I was a kid, literally, my entire life since I was 5-years-old, so it’s a huge part of me and I feel like Ive always had one foot firmly planted in country music. I mean, couldn’t change that even if I wanted to. But I also have a love for all these other styles. To have the creative freedom to be able to mix those, and for you guys to follow along with that is just huge, and I don’t’ take that lightly at all. Really.”
She went on to add that, even though she’s always been very outspoken about her beliefs, she doesn’t want any of her fans that “that thinks a lot differently than I do” ever feel unwelcome at her shows.
Kacey explained that we’re all still neighbors regardless, and it’s simply an opportunity to be “extra kind” because the world needs more than that:
“I know I stay pretty outspoken about things… If you’ve been around since the beginning you know that. But I do also just wanna say, though, that as much as I can be outspoken, if there is anybody in this room tonight, and there very well could be, if there’s anyone in here that thinks a lot differently than I do, I just wanna say that I’m really glad you’re here still. Truly.
You may be a new fan, you might be an old fan, and I just want you to know that, even if we both think differently than each other, we’re still neighbors and I’m still glad you’re here. And I hope you’ve had a great time tonight. I hope you felt love in this building, and maybe you’ve made a friend or two, or maybe you’re just enjoying the songs, but I would never want my outspokenness to make someone feel unwelcome in this space. Ever.
And I think this is a time to be extra kind. That doesn’t mean be a doormat, it mean stand up for what you believe in. But you can still be kind, and some people don’t like that and the more they don’t like it, I think that’s the kinder you have to be.”
Amen…
I think that’s a message we can all get behind, and that’s how music and concerts should be. And in my experience, that’s how all country concerts are.
There’s this weird media narrative that country concerts aren’t “safe spaces” for certain groups of people, and it couldn’t be further from the truth. Whether you’re at a Kacey Musgraves show or a Jason Aldean show or an Eric Church show… everyone is there to enjoy the music and have a good time. Nobody cares where you’re from, what you believe about this or that… don’t believe the nonsense.
