Luke Grimes and the team over at Marshals (and the former team with Yellowstone) are grateful for Mo Brings Plenty and the authenticity he brings to the universe’s western storytelling.
Plenty quickly went from a nameless and no-lines-given character to a fan favorite during his time on Yellowstone. Viewers were thrilled to see his character continue into the sequel spinoff, Marshals, which focuses on Grimes’ Kayce Dutton. And the audience wasn’t alone in that excitement.
Everyone involved with Marshals was also grateful that Mo Brings Plenty was sticking around, and it’s no surprise that he did, because he serves as the American Indian Affairs Coordinator and Cultural Consultant for the series. Plenty takes pride in making sure Native American representation in film and television is as accurate as possible, and Luke Grimes told TV Insider that Mo is invaluable when it comes to writing scenes that feature Native American culture:
“Anytime there’s a scene like that, he’s completely in charge of how that goes. The writer, as he’s beginning to write a scene like that, will call Mo and ask him exactly what should be said, and what should be done, and the right way to do it.”
Such a great asset to have as a part of your production.
Grimes went on to say that Mo Brings Plenty is quite possibly the greatest resource the Yellowstone Universe of shows has. He’s always open to questions, and Grimes can’t imagine doing Marshals or Yellowstone without him:
“What’s great about Mo is he’s always open for any questions that we have. There’s some more sweat lodge stuff this year, and I know a lot of the newer cast members who hadn’t been done that before, it’s just cool to watch them ask him questions and have him explain what it all means to his culture.
He’s just a wealth of information about the ways of Native people, and I can’t imagine doing this show without him, honestly. He’s just been such a great resource for us to make sure that we get that stuff right.”
And Grimes says that Plenty is always happy to help bring Native American culture into the spotlight.
In doing so, Mo Brings Plenty has helped Yellowstone and Marshals be more authentic, and has also turned his character into one of great importance:
“I think that’s his goal, deep down. I think that’s why he likes doing this, is just bringing that sort of forgotten culture back to the forefront. And also, he’s become such a great character in the show beyond being the consultant. People really love that character.
Originally, he was just meant to be Rainwater’s driver (in Yellowstone), who didn’t have any lines, basically. He just was his heavy that would just stand there, and over time, he just becomes a really, really great, really rich character.”
Without a doubt… and certainly a character worthy of their own spinoff, am I right? Hopefully Mo Brings Plenty gets his own show one day, but until then, it’s nice to see him on Marshals.
