You know what happens when you assume…
Rosie O’Donnell is making amends and clearing the air after comments she made recently rubbed her friend Wynonna Judd the wrong way.
During a recent interview on The Tangle podcast, Rosie was talking about (what else) President Donald Trump and how she refuses to be friends with Trump supporters – except for Wynonna:
“I don’t really have any people in my life who support him. I think it would be very difficult to do that.
Now, I am friends with Wynonna Judd, who I love very much, and I’ve known her for many, many years. And she is a supporter of Trump. And somehow, we never bring it up.
I kind of give her a grace in a way. She’s had so much in her life with her mom taking her own life and just the complicated nature of her upbringing, and I really love her and I care about her, and for some reason, I’m able to put that aside when we interact.”
How nice of Rosie to give Wynonna “grace.” Like she’s doing her a favor by being friends with her.
But anyway, Wynonna has never publicly talked politics, so it was a little bit of a surprise for Rosie to reveal that she’s a Trump supporter. But Wynonna responded in an interview with People by clarifying that…Rosie has no idea what she’s talking about:
“I’m in shock, just so you know. I’ve never spoken to her about politics in my life. Assumption, 100%. She doesn’t know anything about my stuff. And I’m an independent. I don’t discuss it.
I don’t know where it came. It’s complete assumption. And I’m not angry about it, I heard it and I went, ‘What the, I don’t ever remember talking to her about this.’ So she’s assuming.’”
So why did Rosie assume that Wynonna was a Trump supporter? Well after her friend pushed back, Rosie issued a snarky statement apologizing – sort of – and pointing out that the country singer has performed at Trump’s Florida resort in the past:
“I just thought as she has performed at Mar-a-Lago that she was. I apologize if I was wrong.”
Wynonna’s performance at Mar-a-Lago came in 2023, when she performed “Love Is Alive” during a gala hosted by the America First Policy Institute in 2023.
As to whether or not she planned to call her friend Rosie to discuss the comments, Wynonna said she might just let it go:
“I’m thinking about it. I just don’t want drama. So if there’s going to be drama, I’m like, ‘Oh for crap’s sake, there’s so much going on right now in the world. Can we just love each other?’”
Well apparently the two did touch base after the awkward situation, because Rosie took to social media to publicly apologize to Wynonna for her comments.
Rosie says that she also reached out privately, and Wynonna clarified that she had performed for presidents of both parties:
“I was wrong to assume Wy was a Trump supporter just because she performed at marlargo – but as she told me she has sung for seven presidents on both sides of the aisle. My apologies here publicly (as I first made them privately).”
So does this mean Rosie will think before she speaks in the future? I wouldn’t hold my breath.
