Happy Middle of Nowhere day to those who celebrate.
Today, the Texas native Kacey Musgraves released her highly anticipated album, Middle Of Nowhere, produced by Musgraves alongside longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk.
She put out two songs from the 13-song tracklist in the lead-up to the release, including the lead single “Dry Spell,” as well as the title track “Middle of Nowhere.” Kacey also has four features from some fellow artists as well, an absolutely stacked lineup that features Willie Nelson, Billy Strings, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Mrs. Miranda Lambert herself.
“Dry Spell” quickly became a fan favorite after its release as the lead single. The cheeky song, however, came out of a very real place for Musgraves. In speaking with NPR Music’s Jewly Hight, Kacey explained that it came from a very real place. She went through the longest period of her adult life being single, and up until that point, she had feared being alone in every aspect, but she found it to be liberating in many ways:
“I typically always have been in relationships. This was the longest period in my adult life where I was on my own, and I had gone through a break up. I was taking stock of my relationships and what I want[ed] in my life, and really learning how to lean into being alone. I started really loving my singledom.
It was a long time without any intimacy with anyone else, and I had always feared that before I experienced it, just having this notion that I needed someone to be happy, which I found to be completely untrue.”
With “Dry Spell” being the second song on the tracklist, Musgraves intentionally set fans up to go on a journey of self-discovery throughout the Middle Of Nowhere tracklist, nearly rounding out with track number 12, “Mexico Honey.”
“Mexico Honey” is a steamy tune that rounds out the album before Musgraves closes it with “Hell On Me.” “Mexico Honey” features Spanish influence with the melody, while Musgraves delivers the lyrics at a quick speed that’s almost rap-like. The song’s tone is set from the first time, as Musgraves describes a sexy cowboy Casanova who has captured her heart.
Instead of going out as the two intended, they turn the car around and get acquainted with one another in a different way… If you’re picking up what I’m putting down.
“You’re goin’ down smooth like Mexico, honey
Take my heart, take all my money
I want you so bad, it ain’t even funny
I mean for real, what the hell
You got me shakin’ my ass in my hot-pink shorts
You’re layin’ down laughin’ on the bathroom floor
Oh, I dropped it down, you said you’ll stay
We’re gonna ride this wave ’til it breaks, yeah.”
The song is beyond catchy, a little saucy, and perfectly wraps up the self-discovery that Musgraves has throughout this record that it’s okay to be alone…But it’s also fun to have some pleasure in your life. Kacey Musgraves’ “Dry Spell” was broken by “Mexico Honey.” Add this one to the long list of horny country songs….
Give it a spin:
