It’s a hit.
Today, Morgan Wallen and Ella Langley released their new duet called “I Can’t Love You Anymore,” which they just performed live for the first time last week at Morgan’s show in Tuscaloosa, Alabama during the second weekend of his Still the Problem tour, which Ella opened.
She’s coming off of a massive release week for her incredible sophomore studio album Dandelion, which debuted at the top of the Billboard Top 200 all-genre album chart, and has already become one of the biggest albums of the year. Eagle-eyed fans noticed in the lead-up to Ella’s Dandelion album announcement that she had actually already dropped a hint for fans in her “Choosin’ Texas” music video, which featured a Tennessee (for Morgan Wallen) license plate with the letters “ICLYA.”
And after it was revealed what that acronym stood for when they announced the song, fans can now listen to the duet, which Ella wrote with Austin Goodloe and Joybeth Taylor. It finds them in a place of heartache, knowing they shouldn’t be together but not being able to fully let go. Ella opens by admitting she found a “lighter in a night stand” that reminded her of him:
“I found a lighter in the night stand
That’s why I’m thinking of you, I guess
What part of over don’t I understand
‘Cause damn, I miss the taste of your cigarette
Yeah, your memory pulls me right back in
It’s like I forget
I can’t love you anymore
Can’t keep chasing you around in the back of my mind
I can’t need you anymore
Can’t keep sharing this bed with your ghost every night
I hate that your kiss left a burn on my lips
Oh baby, how do I tell my heart it ain’t yours
When I said it before
I can’t love you anymore”
Morgan comes in with the next verse, saying he still has a picture of them “collecting dust on the dash,” and he can’t forget her, either:
“Just when I think you let me let you go
There’s picture of us covered in dust on the dash
So you lit it up, just to see the smoke
Wrote me plus you with the date on the back
Look at that”
Morgan says he and Ella have been wanting to get together for a duet for a while, and when he heard the opening riff, he instantly knew he wanted to sing it with her:
“Ella and I have been talking about doing a song for a little while now. We have been on tour together and I’m a huge fan of what she does. She wrote and sent over this song and from the beginning riff, it was hard to deny. I’m honored she wanted me to be the one to do it with her.”
It has a super catchy production, they sound great together, and as two of the genres absolutely biggest stars right now, I have no doubt this song will be huge for both of them, and I’m into it… it makes a ton of sense for them to put out a song like this, and Morgan doesn’t do a ton of duets with the ladies, this is his first with a fellow country artist, actually, and Ella was the perfect choice. It seems like this will serve as a bonus track of sorts from Dandelion, though it will likely end up being one of the biggest on the album, and I have no doubt it’s going to be a hit. I mean, Ella and Morgan teaming up for a duet is a no-brainer as both of their careers are firing on all cylinders at the moment.
Truly, everything both of them are doing right now is going straight to the top of the charts, and you can see what you think for yourself here:
