The next song from Ryan Bingham’s forthcoming album, They Call Us The Lucky Ones.
Today, he released a song called “Twist the Knife,” and if you’ve heard Bingham’s name and maybe haven’t gotten into his music yet, he he played Walker on the hit series Yellowstone, but he was a staple in the Texas music world long before that.
This new album will be his first full-length, studio record in seven years, though this one will mark a bit of a shift in terms of the concepts and content of the songs, as many of us love Bingham’s knack for the more sad and dark kinds of country songs he puts out, but he married his Yellowstone co-star Hassie Harrison in October of 2023, and he explained that this was “the most fun” he’s ever had making an album, and I have to imagine that has an awful lot to do with how happy he is in his personal life:
“This album was probably the most fun I’ve had making a record. I’ve always loved records that feel loose and live and gritty with a bit of soul, where the imperfections from the moment are left in.
Working with musicians as talented as The Texas Gentlemen really let us lean into that in a way I hadn’t experienced before. There was an unspoken understanding between us about what each song needed, so we tracked most of it live with minimal overdubs, just playing and letting the feel lead.
It finally felt like I was capturing these songs the way I always heard them in my head. We can’t wait to get out on the road and share them with fans.”
I’m actually really intrigued to hear how this new love and married life has changed his approach to songwriting, though don’t worry fans, he’s not going to leave us completely without anything to cry to… because he is absolutely at his best with the writing on “Twist the Knife”:
“I hit the highway and wound up in jail
I lick my wounds from the hand that was held
Roaming I ramble and run from my own
Much like a song from an old rolling stone
Been where I’ve been, had to leave where I’d gone
And all I can think of is getting back home
So I can feel your heartbeat on top of mine
And hope that the morning can untwist the knife
I’ve felt the love and the violence that blooms
Wounded the silence and broke out the tomb
Cut down the back road my thumb in the air
Jumped on a train that was goin’ nowhere
Still to this day there just ain’t nothin’ like
The ache in your heartbreak when they twist the knife”
This one feels like classic Ryan Bingham, and on this song and the rest of the other nine tracks, he was joined by his band The Texas Gentlemen. In addition to Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen, Ryan Ake (guitars), Daniel Creamer (piano, organ), Paul Grass (drums, percussion) and Scott Lee (bass), the record also features Richard Bowden (fiddle, mandolin) and Cody Huggins (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, pedal steel).
If you’re a longtime Bingham fan who fell in love with his music on his 2007 breakout album Mescalito, or any of them before or since, you’ll feel right at home with “Twist the Knife.” Check it out:
