I’m not crying… okay, maybe a little bit. Megan Moroney released her already very successful third studio album Cloud 9 a few weeks ago, and there’s some great stuff on there, including songs like “I Only Miss You” with Ed Sheeran, “Bells & Whistles” with Kacey Musgraves, “Medicine,” and more, but one of the saddest on the tracklist has to be a song called “Wedding Dress.”
Written by Megan along with Ben Williams and Colin Healy, it finds Megan thinking ahead to a time when she’s getting ready to walk down the aisle, and praying to God that she never misses a former flame on the day of her wedding. Places like a bar, in the car, on her birthday or meeting someone with his name are fine, but not when she’s wearing white:
“What if the missing you don’t ever go away?
What if you’re burned into my brain?
What if my heart’s already made up its mind?
And what if I find somebody new
And I’m about to say “I do”
Then out of the blue, I think of you?
Hell, what a mess
So let me miss him now
But God, don’t let me miss him in a wedding dress”
It’s a gut-punch in so many ways and an utterly heartbreaking notion, and “Wedding Dress” is actually a song she wrote and started sharing years ago, though it obviously didn’t make the final cut for an album until now.
Megan says it came from a place of being “distraught” over a guy and thinking that, even if she married someone else one day, she would still miss him and think of him:
“When I wrote that song I was distraught over a guy and kept thinking, ‘What if I get married one day and I’m still missing him? When is this gonna stop?’
I was in shambles at the time and I couldn’t get the verses right, but when I finally moved on I was able to figure it all out. My fans are so funny and tell me things like, ‘Megan, please don’t release this song, it’ll set me back years of healing.
There’s a little desperation in the lyrics, but I hope it ends up inspiring everyone and lets them know that I did get over it—so if they’re going through a heartbreak, they’ll get over it too.”
I think it’s a fear so many women have, and it really is the worst case scenario if you’re in a white dress, ready to walk down the aisle, and you think of someone else because it’s the kind of heartbreak you can never move on from.
So that’s why I have a bone to pick with whoever these people are on TikTok who have started a trend of sorts where they pick an already-heartbreaking love story from a show or movie and set it to her song… and let me just say, I am not okay. There are a couple on here that end happily, but still… grab the tissues.
