He doesn’t miss.
Today, Luke Combs dropped the last song before the release of his new album The Way I Am next Friday, March 20th, and it’s a co-write with Cody Johnson and Jake Mears called “I Ain’t No Cowboy.”
It’s the first one that’s been cut for an album that Luke and Cody have written together, and we knew before this song was even released that it would be great with those two collaborating, and Luke says they penned it while on tour in Australia. They had planned to set aside time to write, and as fate would have it, they both had similar ideas for a cowboy-inspired song like this.
Because they finished it so quickly, Luke was able to play it for fans there a while back, and now it’s out in the world for all of us to hear:
“We were on tour in Australia with Cody Johnson and had planned to get together while we were there. I had this cowboy idea for a song, and ironically, he’d started writing something really similar that same day.
We ended up finding time to write and finished ‘I Ain’t No Cowboy’ with his guitar player Jake Mears, and I even got to play it at one of the shows Down Under. The fans really seemed to love it, so I’m excited they get to hear it a week before the full album comes out.”
It’s a heartbreaker that finds Combs reflecting on a girl who left him in the dust, and how he knew from the beginning it would eventually end that way. She was wild, and he knew that going into it, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less now that the relationship is over:
“If I knew that day I met her
Someday I’d have to forget her
That didn’t stop me from tryna hold her
Like a river holds the rain
She always wanted wide open spaces
And I tried my best to tame her
I would’ve been better off
Than to have freed a bunch of wild mustangs
I ain’t no cowboy, but I wish I was
We would’ve rode off together in the settin’ sun
Instead of watching her ride right out of my life
If I could’ve roped her heart back in
I could’ve been what she needed when
She saddled up and she kicked up a cloud of dust
I ain’t no cowboy and now I wish I was”
These are the kinds of songs that Combs always does so well, and honestly, all of the pre-released singles from this new album have been really good, and I think this has potential to be his best album yet.

“I Ain’t No Cowboy”
Luke has released several songs from the 22-song tracklist thus far including “Back in the Saddle,” “My Kinda Saturday Night,” “15 Minutes,” “Days Like These,” and most recently prior to today, a stunning love song inspired by his wife Nicole, “Be By You.”
The album was produced by Combs, Jonathan Singleton and Chip Matthews, and it will feature just one other artist on the song “Ever Mine,” as we get to hear Combs and Alison Krauss team up for the first time and I’m sure that will be incredible.
