‘Yellowstone’ Fans Rejoice That Monica Was Finally Killed Off Ahead Of ‘Marshals’ Series Premiere

Monica Dutton

Now that everyone has had an opportunity to watch and/or stream the new Yellowstone spinoff series, Marshals, let’s see what the fans thought of the series premiere.

Of course, we all know that the premise of the series is Luke Grimes reprising his role as Kayce Dutton and taking a job with the US Marshals where he’ll utilize that Navy SEAL skillset to kick some a** and take some names. The show has been billed as a more action-packed spinoff of Yellowstone, with less of a focus on ranching and more of a focus on law enforcement, but prior to the season premiere, the big question on everybody’s mind was… where’s Monica? She wasn’t in the cast list, she wasn’t in the trailer.

And it was quickly revealed that she has died of cancer, and that’s why Kayce Dutton, decided to take the job.

Now, generally when a character in a show gets killed off, especially the wife of a beloved cast member (even it was between two separate shows), fans are sad or shocked, but that really isn’t the case here. In fact, it’s quite the opposite… fans have wanted Monica gone for a long time, and they finally got their wish.

Back in 2022, Kevin Costner asked Yellowstone fans what their hopes were for the start of Season 5, and the answers were not exactly what he was expecting:

“For Kayce’s wife to get shipped away forever.”

“A single Kayce to move back to the ranch

“I want Kayce to leave Monica.”

“Hopefully Monica moves far away and Kayce finds a real woman… not a ‘poor me’ victim.”

“Monica dies ! I’ve had enough of her now.”

Yeesh… tell us how you really feel.

And now that she has officially passed… were fans dancing in the streets or was it more of a “be careful what you wish for” kind of scenario? Was there any regret? Nope… fans are happy to be rid of Monica Dutton. In a Reddit thread about the Marshals premiere, fans offered up their reactions, but there was definitely a consensus on Monica’s fate.

Here’s some of the comments:

She was a cancer… And this is coming from someone who has cancer.

YASSSSS, I might watch it just because they finally killed that waste of space.

I love how my fiancé and I watched Yellowstone separately and both agreed that Monica sucks

Kinda sad that when she got into the car accident, we hoped she would die and the baby live.

If the audience liked Monica more maybe she’d still be alive but let’s be honest, she was annoying

Monica died? Damn, I might just actually watch this then, lol

Monica exiting was the best thing that could have happened.

I’m thrilled they killed off Monica but they just added her whiny son.

Her character just didn’t fit, how Kayce going to be an elite US marshal running around fighting crime with Monica’s constant drama.

While Monica getting whacked by cancer is a reason to celebrate unfortunately the spawn known as Tate survives.

I was dreading having the opening episode be about Monica crying over something for 45 minutes.

We all hated Monica, but CANCER?? Have her die in the bombing, have that be a reason for Kacey becoming a Marshall, if you want actual character motivation.

Absolutely couldn’t stand one scene with Monica or Tate in Yellowstone so very happy to see they are both written out-as they should be

Glad “Monica” isn’t in the show. The acting was worse than a polluted river.

OOF… Tate catching some strays too.

All in all, it seems as though this new show will be much more like some kind of NCIS: Montana, as opposed to your typical Taylor Sheridan series. A very standard, procedural cop drama on network television. Less swear words, less sexuality, sanitized for CBS. Could it be interesting? Sure… but without Taylor Sheridan doing the writing (Spencer Hudnut is at steering wheel), I just wouldn’t expect the same kind of magic that we saw in the early seasons of Yellowstone.

Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen it yet:
