Sheryl Crow Says Nashville Ice Storm Is “Symbolic” Of ICE Raids: “We Are Not Helpless”

That’s…quite the leap.

As Nashville is still recovering from a crippling ice storm that caused untold destruction and left hundreds of thousands without power, apparently the situation reminded singer and Music City resident Sheryl Crow of…ICE raids.

In Nashville and across much of the south and eastern United States, a massive winter storm caused chaos after dropping snow and ice over the weekend.

Music City got hit with around a half inch of ice, which caused widespread power outages, forced businesses to shut down, and wreaked havoc on the roads. At one point on Sunday, Nashville Electric Service reported that there were around 240,000 customers without power – nearly half of the 470,000 customers in Davidson County.

The scenes out of Nashville over the weekend were almost post-apocalyptic, with trees falling on power lines, poles breaking, and roads completely impassable due.

As of right now, there are still over 90,000 people without power in the Nashville area, many of whom have been in the dark – and cold – since Sunday when the storm hit. And even after the storm passed, there hasn’t been much relief from Mother Nature: The temperature has remained below freezing all week, though it’s expected to climb to a balmy 40 degrees today, which would be a welcome development in trying to get rid of some of this ice.

Those without power are experiencing dangerously cold temperatures inside their homes, with many reporting that even inside it’s dropped down into the 30s.

Naturally this all made Sheryl Crow think of the ongoing ICE raids currently being executed by the Trump administration.

In an Instagram post, Crow took time to compare the natural disaster hitting Nashville to the immigration enforcement by the federal government:

“We are going on four days of an ice storm with no power and no definite end in sight, which has felt very symbolic with all that is going on right now. (While my power was restored yesterday, much of Nashville is still without power with record low temperatures.)

I have had time to contemplate what it means to feel powerless. But, we are never without power as long as we come together and raise our voices.

We must show up to protect our freedom and the existence of our democracy from a corrupt government, that is trying to make us believe we have no rights. They are lying.

We are not helpless, even where ice/ICE is concerned. I will continue to post in my stories ways you can help if you feel powerless.”

I dunno, that seems like quite the mental gymnastics to connect a literal ice storm to immigration policy that you don’t agree with.

Of course the comments on her post were all over the place, from those agreeing with her sentiment to those calling her a “snowflake” (unironically) and expressing their support for the immigration raids. The arguing in the comments apparently got to the point that Crow has since limited comments on her post.

Immigration and the raids by ICE are obviously a hot topic right now, but man, it’s exhausting having to hear everything go back to politics. Can’t we just suffer through this ice storm in peace?
