Typically, bison are recognized by their brown fur and dark skin, but white bison are astonishingly rare—occurring in only about one in 10 million births. This rarity can result from albinism, leucism, or other genetic factors.

White bison hold deep cultural and spiritual significance, particularly for many Native American tribes.
For the Lakota people, the appearance of a white buffalo is sacred, symbolizing the return of the White Buffalo Calf Woman—a figure representing both blessings and warnings.
The Legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman
According to Lakota tradition, a great famine struck the tribe many years ago. Two men were sent to search for food to sustain their people. During their journey, they saw a figure approaching in the distance. Fearing it could be an enemy, they hid and observed. As the figure drew closer, they realized it was a woman carrying sagebrush—a vision of unparalleled beauty.
One of the men, overcome with desire, turned to his companion and said, “She is more beautiful than anyone I have ever seen. I want her for my wife.” The other rebuked him, saying, “How dare you have such thoughts? She is holy and beyond us.”
Though hidden, the woman appeared to sense their presence and addressed the first man from afar: “Come. What is it you wish?”
Compelled by lust, the man approached her and attempted to claim her as his own. Instantly, a whirlwind enveloped them, and when it cleared, only the woman remained. The first man had been reduced to a pile of bones. The woman then spoke to the second man, saying, “I am journeying to your people to deliver an important message. Go ahead of me and tell them I am coming. Instruct them to move their camp and form a circle, leaving an opening to the north. In the center, they must pitch a large tipi facing north. There, I will meet Bull Walking Upright and share my teachings.”
The man hurried back and conveyed her instructions. The tribe prepared the camp as directed. When the woman arrived, she presented a sacred pipe made of red stone, adorned with the image of a buffalo calf. She gave it to Bull Walking Upright, teaching him prayers to honor the Creator and rituals to call the buffalo close, ensuring the tribe’s survival.
The woman stayed to teach the people how to live in harmony, respect one another, and care for the earth. Upon completing her teachings, she left the camp. Just outside the circle, she transformed four times—first into a black buffalo, then red, then brown, and finally into a pure white buffalo before vanishing over a hill.
The Lakota people have honored her teachings ever since. The sacred pipe she gifted is passed down through generations and is now kept by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the 19th keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe and Bundle.
Whether or not you believe the legend, the story of the White Buffalo Calf Woman carries timeless lessons: respect for the earth, the importance of peace, and the value of living in harmony. Here’s to the rare and magnificent white buffalo—a symbol of beauty, hope, and sacred wisdom.
