Yikes…
A bombshell hit the college football world yesterday when the University of Michigan announced that they were firing head coach Sherrone Moore, who took over the program in 2024 after Jim Harbaugh departed for the NFL (amidst a cheating scandal).
Moore went 9-3 this season after a disappointing 8-5 season in 2024 (but they beat Ohio State so it didn’t really matter), so it’s not like he was exactly on the hot seat. But as it turns out Michigan’s decision had nothing to do with his performance on the field and was because of what he was doing in the bedroom.
According to a statement from Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel, Moore was fired for cause after allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a female staffer for the Wolverines football team
“Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately. Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”
Moore has been married to his wife, Kelli, for a decade, and the couple have three children together.
Now, there have been rumors flying around for weeks that this was coming, and there’s all kinds of speculation and “inside sources” providing more details about what allegedly happened. But all we know right know is that Moore is out, and Michigan will be searching for a new coach, at a time when most of the head coaching vacancies have been filled and there aren’t a ton of coaches on the market anymore.
Unfortunately though, some disturbing news came out of Michigan after it was announced that Moore had been fired, when it was reported that Moore was detained by police in Saline, Michigan and turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department “for investigation into potential charges.”
And while the charges haven’t been revealed, Moore has remained in custody since his arrest and according to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, will be arraigned in court tomorrow:
“The matter involving Mr. Moore remains under active investigation by law enforcement, and as a result, we do not expect charging decisions or an arraignment today. Mr. Moore remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail.”
TMZ also gave us more insight into what those charges might be when they obtained dispatch audio from Moore’s arrest, during which it’s said that officers were dispatched for a “domestic” assault, with the caller (presumably the employee with whom Moore was having a relationship) reporting that the coach was “attacking her” and stating that he had been “stalking her for months.”
Dispatchers also say that the suspect was suicidal due to losing his job.
The identity of the employee hasn’t been officially confirmed, though it’s been largely speculated on social media to be an assistant for Moore who recently deactivated several social media profiles. The employee in question also received a 55% pay increase this year.
I’m sure we’ll learn more about the whole situation tomorrow when Moore appears in court, but for now, it sounds like he’s going to be behind bars for at least another night.
