What in the world is going on in Birmingham?
It hasn’t been a great season for UAB, who are 3-7 on the season and are playing under interim coach Alex Mortensen after firing Trent Dilfer earlier this year.
The Blazers are taking on the USF Bulls today in Birmingham, but apparently a wild situation developed before the game that sent two players to the hospital and one to jail.
According to a statement from UAB, a football player stabbed two of his teammates at the university’s Football Operations Building, sending at least one to the hospital in an ambulance just hours before kickoff against South Florida.
The wildest part of the story, though, is that UAB decided to go forward with the game, after two of their players were STABBED by another one of their players this morning, with the university reporting that it was the team’s decision to play the game:
“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition. Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect – another player – remains in custody and an investigation is taking place.
The team elected to play today’s game. UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”
I dunno, it seems like the team maybe doesn’t make the best decisions so I feel like somebody should have stepped in and called this one off, especially since it doesn’t really mean anything to either team at this point. Neither team is in contention for the American Athletic Conference championship game or the playoffs, despite USF looking like a conference championship contender earlier in the season.
According to reports, the suspect is UAB defensive lineman Daniel Mincey, a transfer from the University of Kentucky, and reportedly stemmed from an incident that took place at the team’s practice on Friday.
Records from the Jefferson County, Alabama Sheriff’s Department shows that Mincey was booked into jail at 12:48 PM this afternoon on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault, and is currently being held without bond.
The names of the victims haven’t been released, but it’s good to hear that it sounds like their injuries are non-life threatening.
But man, what a wild story to come out just hours before kickoff.
