Oh, well in that case…
We’ve got a special election here in Nashville next month to replace Republican Congressman Mark Green, who stepped down from his seat in the House of Representatives for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional district to take a job in the private sector back in July.
The election, which is scheduled for December 2, 2025, is between GOP candidate Matt Van Epps, a veteran and member of the Tennessee National Guard who previously served as the state’s former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, and Democrat Aftyn Behn, a former community organizer and current representative for Nashville in the Tennessee House of Representatives.
But earlier today, a resurfaced clip of Behn bashing the city she wants to represent in Washington D.C. went viral on social media.
In the comments from an appearance on the Year Old GRITS podcast on 2020, Behn claimed she “hates” Nashville:
“I hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music, I hate all of the things that make Nashville. I hate it.”
It’s not the first time Behn has shown her disdain for the people she wants to represent in Congress. Back in 2019, she wrote an op-ed calling Tennessee a “racist state” and claiming that “racism is in the air we breathe.”
Sounds like a fun person to be around.
Well after her comments on Music City went viral, Behn took to social media to defend herself and claim that she doesn’t REALLY hate Nashville or country music – citing as evidence the fact that she’s cried in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
“Today, the Republicans decided that they’re going to start this narrative that me, the state representative who represents downtown Nashville, doesn’t like the city.”
Yeah, I don’t know where Republicans would get that narrative just from hearing you say “I hate Nashville.” (Direct quote). Gotta be fake news. But anyway, Behn continues:
“Sure, I get mad at the bachelorettes sometimes. I get mad at the pedal taverns, right? You’re talking to somebody who has cried no less than 10 times in the Country Music Hall of Fame. The girl that just goes to the Ryman to hang out. No, no, we’re not even gonna go there.”
Behn goes on to call the accusations that she hates Nashville “rumors,” despite the fact that she quite literally said “I hate Nashville.” But anyway, don’t believe your ears when you hear her say she hates Nashville – I mean, she HAS cried at the Hall of Fame.
Of course people in the comments were quick to remind her that this wasn’t some made-up narrative but simply her own comments, that she said herself on a podcast. But you know how politics and politicians are these days.
Reminds me of that old joke: How can you tell when a politician is lying? When their mouth’s moving.
I still need to go and cast my vote in the election, but I guess I better find out how many times Matt Van Epps has cried in the Hall of Fame before I decide who I’m voting for.
