Luke Combs Gives Update On Potential Morgan Wallen Collaboration: “Gotta Find The Right Song For It”

Still in the works.

Over the last five years, there have been plenty of ongoing storylines throughout country music. Whether its the rise of the independent scene spearheaded by Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers, the increasing divide between consumers and country radio, the evolving music landscape thanks to social media and, of course, the meteoric rise to fame from the likes of Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs and other superstars in the genre.

With Combs and Wallen in particular, it’s hard to truly separate the two. Despite having radically different music styles, with Combs’ harkening back to the turn of the century offerings of the late 1990s and early 2000s and Wallen spearheading the push of pop/trap elements through the use of his highly-criticized 808 beats and hip-hop-inspired production, the two are nearly inseparable when it comes to discussing country music today. Of course, this is also due to the fact that they not only debuted within one year of each other but also due to the fact that they’re two of the most successful country artists in the history of the genre.

Of course, Wallen continues to dominate nearly any chart that he can conceivably top, highlighted by the fact he holds the record for most songs charted in a single week on the all-genre Billboard 100 with 37 entries, he became the first artist to spend at least 10 weeks atop the all-genre Billboard’s 200 chart with three consecutive albums and additionally he’s spent the eight-most weeks in history atop the Billboard 200.

As for Combs, he’s also gotten his fair share of accolades over the past few years. Along with 19 career #1 hits on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and back-t0-back CMA Entertainer of the Year wins in 2021 and 2022, the “Hurricane” singer recently surpassed Garth Brooks as the highest-selling country artist in history with over 168 million units sold.

All this is to say, a collaboration between these two juggernauts has been something many fans have dreamed of over the past five or so years as the pair continue to smash record after record of their own. And while it may not be on the way yet, Combs has yet to rule it out.

In a recent interview before last night’s 59th annual CMA Awards, the North Carolina native sat down with Wayne D of the prominent Nashville radio station, The Big 98, to discuss the topic that’s been on so many people’s minds.

Being extremely candid about the situaton, Combs would admit that they talked about it a “couple of years ago” (most likely in 2023 when the two performed together at the 2023 BMI Awards) but they have yet to find the right song.

“We talked about it a couple of years ago, and we just haven’t found the song.”

The “Beautiful Crazy” singer would go on to admit that there’s a TON of pressure on the song. Of course, this is incredibly reasonable given the fact that both artist’s fanbases are not only incredibly passionate but also due to the fact that this potential collaboration has been so anticipated for years.

“I feel like there would be a lot of pressure on the song to be like perfect. And if it wasn’t right, it could just go terribly. People will be like, ‘We waited all this time, and it’s such a let down.”

Finally, Combs would reiterate that he would absolutely love to still do a song with Wallen. With that being said, however, he’s still searching for the perfect song.

“I would love to do it. I don’t know if he would love to do it, but I would love to do it. I think it would be cool. but you gotta find the right song for it.”

So, the final question that remains is: “Will we ever get a Morgan Wallen x Luke Combs song in the future?”

I would have to say yes, in due time of course. Much like Wallen and Post Malone’s collaboration on last year’s “I Had Some Help,” a potential crossover between the “Last Night’ singer and Combs is all but guaranteed to be a long-running #1 hit and another billion-stream song for the two country powerhouses. I’m not a betting man, but I can all but guarantee we’ll see a duet from the two before the end of the decade. It simply makes too much sense.
