The Taylor Swift effect…
We’ve talked about the Taylor Sheridan effect many times here at Whiskey Riff, as the music he’s featured on his shows like Yellowstone, Landman, and more have made a positive impact on country artists. Sheridan’s willingness to highlight smaller artists on his shows give them a global platform for them to showcase their music, and it gives the show a very authentic feel having music that accurately represents that agricultural and blue collar space.
But Taylor Sheridan is not the only person in Hollywood that has the power to make an impact, using his platform for good. Recently, the Taylor Swift effect created an opportunity for the Monterey Bay Aquarium to raise awareness for their Sea Otter Program.
There’s no denying that Taylor Swift’s influence might be the largest in the world. Her die-hard fans love to know what designers the super star wears, and often will seek out similar wardrobe pieces to match their idol. So, when Taylor Swift showed up to The Official Release Party for her new album The Life Of A Showgirl casually sporting a vintage otter t-shirt from the aquarium, it did not take long fans to want a vintage design for themselves.
The aquarium took the viral moment as an opportunity to bring back to design to support their sea otters.
“We honestly didn’t know what to expect. It quickly became clear this wasn’t just a pop-culture moment — it was an opportunity to elevate our Sea Otter Program to a global audience.”
A spokesperson for the aquarium told Daily Mail.
The aquarium decided to bring back the 1993 design Swift was sporting and turned the sales of the shirt into a fundraising opportunity- with a sustainable twist. To get one of these re-designed shirts, you had to donate a little over $65 to their Sea Otter Program, as a thank you, the aquarium would send donors one of these special t-shirts.
“We’ve teamed up with Liberty Graphics, who use PVC-free, water-based ink that’s better for the planet and our ocean, and 100% cotton material that doesn’t shed microplastics in the wash. Donors who give $65.13 through this campaign will receive a re-issue of our classic sea otter shirt as a special thank you for your support.”
For over four decades, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has rescued, rehabilitated, and released more than 1,000 sea otters. Their mission to give back to wildlife has been successful since its conception in the 1980s, and through the support of this donation campaign, they will be able to continue with their mission.
The campaign was an instant hit and reached it’s goal number of $1.3 million hours after it was launched. By the second day the t-shirts were live, donations had surged to more than $2.3 million, which nearly doubled the original target.
“We’re committed to doing this in the most sustainable way that aligns with our values. Using responsible sources and steering clear of fast fashion, this campaign supports our mission, helps protect sea otters, and furthers other vital ocean conservation work.”
However, the aquarium was seeing some of the Taylor Swift effect before they chose to do this re-launch of the vintage design. After Swift was seen the aquarium noticed many donations coming through for the Sea Otter Program in $13 increments. If you know anything about Swifties then you know that 13 is a very significant number for Swift and her fanbase.
They Swifties kept showing up and out after the announcement of the re-launch, and the donations the aquarium received will make a tremendous impact on their program.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce has talked about their love for otters, so it would be even cooler to see them visit the aquarium and see the wonderful work the program is doing.
