The comeback tour that keeps getting worse.
Jessica Simpson has returned to the limelight, but it’s not the triumphant comeback that the “Irresistible” singer had hoped for.
This spring, Jessica Simpson triumphantly returned to music, performing for the first time in fifteen years, surprising the crowd at Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion just outside of Austin, Texas (in addition to making SXSW appearances). The former pop star-turned-actress has stayed out of the limelight for some time, devoting much of her time to raising her children and managing her highly successful shoe brand.
Before Simpson took her hiatus from performing, she tried to do what so many pop artists are doing today and gave country music a good old college try with her last studio album, released in 2008. It wasn’t exactly a commercial success. However, with her return to the studio to work on her latest EP, Nashville Canyon, Part 1, it makes sense why she is hitting the stage again.
Unfortunately for Simpson, since returning to the limelight, each of her performances has been met with harsh criticism. During her first TV performance in over fifteen years on American Idol, fans were less than impressed with her performance, saying the following about her stage presence:
Check out the performance for yourself and see if you agree with the public.
Earlier this week, Simpson was hoping to redeem her live TV performance streak when she appeared on the Today show. The singer performed as part of NBC’s summer breakfast show concert series, singing a medley of songs from her catalog, including past hits such as “I Think I’m in Love with You” and “With You,” as well as her new release, “Fade.”
During the performance, vocally, I thought Simpson delivered a performance similar to her previous ones. It’s not vocals I’m going to write home about, but she held her own and gave fans an entertaining show. However, she appeared to look very uncomfortable while on stage. However, as the performance progresses, you can see that she’s experiencing a major wardrobe malfunction.
Simpson’s corset dress began to slide down during her performance, revealing her pink bra underneath. Thankfully, none of her lady bits were shown to the crowd; however, that was not the worst part of the performance. After leaving the stage, Page Six reported that Simpson shared in the greenroom that she was unable to control her bladder on stage, and ended up urinating herself.
While there have been plenty of artists who have had bathroom issues on stage, even Jelly Roll has admitted he’s pooped his pants before on stage. However, given Simpson’s less-than-stellar performance track record, this was not the news that would get her career back on track. I loved her dedication to getting back in the music business, but it feels like Simpson can’t win and is constantly climbing an uphill battle.
But hey, as Simpson once said herself, “when you gotta go, you gotta go.”
Shania Twain famously told Andy Cohen that she’s peed her pants on stage multiple times, which went pretty viral at the time, but it certainly seems like it’s way more common than you’d think:
