Jeremy Renner Turned Down Hawkeye Season 2 When They Offered Half The Money Of Season 1: “Because I Got Ran Over?”

Jeremy Renner Hawkeye

Jeremy Renner keeping it real.

The 54-year-old actor is beloved by many adults for his roles in The Town, or Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River and Mayor Of Kingstown. For the younger generation, Renner is more closely associated with Marvel’s archery-expert-super-hero known as Hawkeye. He’s appeared in a number of Marvel films, including the Avengers franchise, and even got his own Disney+ TV show: Hawkeye.

Many Marvel fans adored the project, which helped introduce Hailee Steinfeld into the MCU, but after it’s 2021 airing on the streaming service, that was apparently all that Marvel wrote. We’re now learning why a second season of the show never came to fruition, and both Disney’s lackluster offer and Renner’s snowplow accident apparently came into play.

The actor provided some insight into the situation while talking to High Performance:

“They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money. I’m like, ‘Well, it’s going to take me twice the amount of work for half the amount of money, and eight months of my time, essentially, to do it for half the amount?’

I’m like, ‘I’m sorry? Why? Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over? Maybe that’s why you want to pay me half of what I made on the first season?’”

That’s just ridiculous. It’s pretty easy to understand why Renner would feel offended by the pay cut, when he’s only ever been in bigger and larger projects for the super hero brand.

So what did Jeremy Renner end up telling the penny pinchers over at Marvel and Disney as a response to their offer?

“I told them to go fly a kite.”

Translation: don’t expect season two of Hawkeye anytime soon.

And in case you were in need of a refresher in regards to Jeremey Renner saying he was “run over,” the actor was involved in a horrific Snowcat accident in January of 2023. Long story short, in an effort save his nephew, he wound up getting run over by the 14,000 pound machine near his Lake Tahoe home. His new memoir detailing the gruesome accident (titled My Next Breath: A Memoir,) said that his list of injuries included 38 broken bones, a collapsed lung and a lacerated liver.

And on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Renner described the accident as “drowning, getting struck by lightning and bleeding out all at once,” which is just a terrifying but likely accurate description of what went down. In his book, he got more into the extent of the life-threatening injuries that he suffered:

“I knew that my skull was split like a watermelon, my brain pulverized like meat. Skull, jaw, cheekbones, molars; fibula, tibia, lungs, eye sockets, cranium, pelvis, ulna, legs, arms, skin; crack, snap, crack, squeeze, crack. More sounds: a ringing in the ears, as if a gun had unloaded next to my head.

A sting of bright white in my eyes – I was blinded by a coruscating lightning, a lightning that signals the break of my orbital bone, causing my left eyeball to violently burst out of my skull.”

Yeah… then Disney and Marvel want to go offer him half of what he earned before his accident. Funny that they are in the super hero business and didn’t want to shell out some money for a real life super hero. I’m not even sure one of Marvel’s finest could suffer through a wreck like Renner did on the big screen and make it out alive.

Good for Renner for telling Disney and Marvel to “go fly a kite.”
