It’s Master’s season y’all. The holy grail of golf, Augusta, Georgia’s super bowl, and apparently… a black hole for your wallet. Well, at least at the pro shop…
A new video going around from this year’s Masters is getting views for one reason-it shows how much people are spending when they get inside the gates. It was a guy with a microphone asking people how much they spend at the Pro Shop at Augusta National.
The answers? Mind blowing:

“Seventeen hundred.”
“Two thousand.”
“Fifteen hundred.”
“Five thousand.”
“Four thousand.”

And this isn’t the price for tickets to get in the doors, we’re talking merch. They showed their shirts, towels, mugs, umbrellas, garden gnomes, etc… Someone proudly flashed a $135 Peter Millar fleece, and another held up a $225 polo. A baby onesie? $39. While not out of the norm for any golf pro shop, folks here are buying expensive Masters branded clothes for the whole family. You have to imagine some might be running to eBay with their gear to try and cash in on the exclusive merch.
It’s wild how everyone just casually throws out the thousand dollar number so nonchalantly. It’s madness… until you remember where you are.
The Masters obviously is no everyday golf tournament. It’s THE golf tournament. No phones allowed, no chaos, no outside world. It’s known for it’s luxury greens and exclusivity. Once you’re inside, everyone wants the green and yellow logo on everything, since it feels like a trophy to show off that you got to be there.
What’s surprising to me is that while people are walking around with bags of merch worth thousands of dollars, the food at the Masters is notoriously dirt cheap. A viral pic of the menu this year made it’s rounds again, showing the iconic pimento cheese sandwiches for $1.50, and beers for $5. Just one more reason why you feel like you’re in a time warp when you enter the gates:

So maybe that’s why the merch spending feels more justified, but also crazy that with food prices this cheap, they still walk away dropping some crazy cash.
I guess that’s just the Master’s for you, and makes me want to take a trip to the thrift stores in Augusta, because who knows what kind of merch these people are dropping when they replace it every year.
