Just beautiful.
This week, American Idol shared a preview of contestant Breanna Nix’s audition, as she delivered a wonderful rendition of judge and show alumni Carrie Underwood’s hit “Jesus Take The Wheel.”
Nix brought her husband, Austin, to the audition and he played piano, as her young son Emerson went and sat on Carrie’s lap while his mom sang. Nix is a stay-at-home mom from Denton, Texas, and she decided to audition for the show as an example to her son that “anything is possible.” She spoke some about her postpartum weight loss journey, and it’s probably something many watching at home could relate to.
Of course, Carrie is a mom of two boys herself, so it was sweet to watch her interact with Emerson and have him sit with her as his mom sang and dad played piano. He looked like he had just woken up from a nap, though, and he nodded off a few times while she was singing and it was adorable.
Nix has a beautiful voice, and in fact, Carrie teared up at the end of hearing her song, saying:
“I’m sorry, he’s just adorable and sweet and it got to me.”
Brianna told Carrie that Emerson loves her music:
“He’s had so many car rides where he was gonna go to sleep, but I’d get on that chorus, and he’d go ‘Wheel)’ in the carseat, and he knows it word for word.”
Brianna replied to American Idol’s post on Instagram with her audition video, saying it was the “scariest” but “best” moment of her life:
“That was the scariest…. but BEST moment of my life!!! I’ll never ever forget this! Don’t forget to tune in March 9th to see if I got that golden ticket!! Thank you guys so so much. I really appreciate everyone, & I am truly so humbled for this opportunity.”
While this is just a preview and they didn’t yet share if Brianna is making it to the next round and heading to Hollywood, I think it’s pretty safe to assume by Carrie’s reaction, as well as Brianna’s great voice, that she’ll probably get a ticket to Hollywood. The new season of American Idol is set for a two-hour season premiere on Sunday, March 9th on ABC, and will also feature returning judges in Lionel Richie and Carrie’s fellow country music star, Luke Bryan.
Of course, the heart-melting moment between Carrie and Emerson would make it hard to say “no” to his mom, but Brianna has real singing talent and obviously is pretty bold to sing a song like that in front of the artist who made it such a big hit… I give her major props for that.
I also think it will be fun to get to see a different side of Carrie as she takes on this new role, because we rarely get much from her outside of her very professional music side. American Idol gives her a chance to show off more of her personality, and I might just have to watch for the first time in years just to see her on it.
Definitely check out Brianna’s audition, it’s a great moment and I’m sure she’s already on her way to Hollywood:
