I don’t think I’ve ever seen a deer move at such a high speed in such a graceful manner…
Granted, I am not the most avid outdoorswoman, so if I have lived under a rock, don’t hold that statement against me.
Another wave of extreme cold and snow storms hit the southern parts of the United States. With many schools out of session for a few days, many kiddos and families spend their time outdoors playing in the snow, sledding, building snowmen, etc. But if you’re like me, in a location hit with horribly cold temperatures with no snow, you are bundled up inside, jealous of those who can enjoy traditional snow day activities.
With quiet snow days also come some woodland creatures venturing out of their homes to explore portions of neighborhoods they might not frequent on a day-to-day basis, which leads us to this majestic video a small-town woman captures.
In the small town of Mobridge, South Dakota, this woman happened to be in the right place at the right time to see a deer run down her snowy street. However, this is not a traditional run we see from deer.
Whenever I see a deer run, I see gates similar to a horse’s. They have a “jog,” which I see as very similar to the two-beat gait of the trot, and then a quicker-paced “run,” which I see as very similar to a canter. However, deer have a third distinctive gate called “bounding,” “spotting,” or “pronking,” where it appears they prance along the ground, pushing all fours off the ground into long strides.
The gait is hilarious as it appears the animal is prancing along a surface, and boy, this South Dakota doe was putting some pep in his step as he bounded down the street.
I admit I’ve seen deer bound for short spurts, but never for the length of time this deer did.
As the deer swiftly and majestically moves down the street, it first appears as though it is just having fun frolicking in the snow. But as the woman pans the camera toward the start of the street, it’s revealed that a pitbull dog has been on the deer’s tail.
“Only in a small town will you see a deer running up your street being chased by a dog.”
No wonder that deer was trying to high-tail it out of there. (Sorry, I had to.)
The video has gained over 3.7 million views in two short days, and for good reason. It’s hilarious and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. I need more content of deer bounding in my life. I admit I have watched this an embarrassing number of times.
Check it out.
