Zach Top & Jake Worthington Team Up For Impromptu Cover Of Willie Nelson’s “Yesterday’s Wine”

Jake Worthington Zach Top

The future of country music is in good hands with these two on the scene.

Zach Top and Jake Worthington are a duo that I need to see more of. A collaboration between these two men would be one of those songs that gets talked about for years and years to come, and after seeing them on the stage together, I need it to happen.

On Valentine’s Day, Top tore the house down in Durant, Oklahoma, at Chocktaw Casino. Top was in for a big weekend, and the night next, he opened up for Alan Jackson and then brought his ’90s country flare to the San Antonio Rodeo. But despite a packed weekend schedule following Valentine’s Day, Top still made sure he was laying down stellar shows each night.

On this leg of Zach Top’s Cold Beer & Country Music tour, Jake Worthington joins Top as his supporting act, and the two are laying down country gold on stage together. Just like Zach Top is known for reviving ’90s country, Worthington also has an old-school country vibe, bringing the genre back to its roots.

Because these two men have a similar sound, it’s no surprise they covered a classic from Willie Nelson, “Yesterday’s Wine.”

Although “Yesterday’s Wine” was initially written and recorded as the title single for Willie Nelson’s 1971 album Yesterday’s Wine, Merle Haggard and George Jones recorded it as a duet in 1982. The song was a massive hit for Jones and Haggard, hitting number one on the charts and spending a total of ten weeks on the charts.

The song highlights the story of two friends who meet up again many years after their initial meeting. Although their paths have not crossed in quite some time, they reunite as if no time has passed, and instead, their friendship has aged like a fine wine.

“Your presence is welcome with me and my friend here
This is a hangout of mine
We come here quite often and listen to music
And to taste yesterday’s wine

Yesterday’s wine, yesterday’s wine
Aging with time, like yesterday’s wine
Yesterday’s wine, yesterday’s wine
We’re Aging with time, like yesterday’s wine”

Top and Worthington would have made Jones and Haggard proud with this cover…it’s like George Jones’ prophecy of “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes” is being fulfilled with artists like Worthington and Top, and the future of country music is in good hands.

Top and Worthington killed this duet on stage, but I am head over heels in love with their green room warmup. It’s raw and acoustic and highlights the unbridled talent of both artists.

This is country music gold.

If you haven’t seen Zach Top live yet, head over to Vivid Seats and grab some tickets. They give you free tickets just for going to concerts, which is a pretty cool thing to do.
