I don’t know about you, but I LOVE a good stroll through Costco (or Sam’s Club). Sure, the crowds can be overwhelming, and the tallied up total at the end of the trip can be dizzying. However, there’s just something about the membership-only warehouse club store that brings a smile to my face anytime I walk in.
Which is why I’m incredibly intrigued by this new development that’s making waves online. Costco is apparently set to launch one of their first warehouse stores with apartments above it in 2025. The first-of-its-kind building will feature a traditional Costco warehouse store on the bottom level, and then around 800 rental units above it on what is considered a “low rise building.” Some of the apartments would be directed at providing housing for low income households.
According to Thrive Living, the planned project will also include “secure parking, several interior courtyards, a gym, community gardens, rooftop pool, full basketball court and two half courts, and various climbing and play structures.” So in essence, you’ve got everything you could ever need or think of all in one building – as long as you are cool with buying in bulk and eating dirt cheap pizza and hotdogs from the Costco food court everyday.
Brenda Ashby, an executive committee member for the Los Angeles area community association, had this to say about the move by Costco:
“This is truly a game changer for us and a huge investment in the community. We are excited to have quality groceries close to home, in addition to all of the other services Costco provides.”

As of right now, this is the only Costco with built-in residential spaces that’s in development. But you and I both know that if this goes well, we’re going to see “Costco Communities” pop up all across the country. I’d imagine building the apartments on top of existing Costco stores would be too intensive, so this will likely only be something that happens when a new club store is set to be established.
The question is… would you live in one? Personally, I think it would be sweet to live right above a Costco. Bigger cities already offer up apartments directly above grocery stores like Whole Foods and Publix, so it’s not like this is a new idea. It’s just a different idea with a Costco twist – and I think I’d be down to live on top of one of my favorite stores.
