A hunter’s worst nightmare.
As a bit of an outdoorsman myself, one of my biggest fears has always been walking up on my tree stand and seeing something – or someone – has already beaten me to my spot. Has it ever happened to me personally? No… but it’s always been in the back of my head.
Though I’ve never thought about a bear being up in my tree stand as a possibility.
This video below helps paint that picture a bit, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I wouldn’t have handled this situation as calmly or in as entertaining of a fashion as this hunter and outfitter named Taylor Red. The hunter was checking in on his wooden tree stand when he was surprised to see a bear popping a squat in it high up in the tree.
A normal person would have walked away in the opposite direction and conceded that the bear now owned that stand. But this guy is no normal person. He walked right up to the area of the tree stand, and standing ten or so yards away, looked up at the mama bear and said this:
“I’ve told you once, and I’ve told you 1,000 times. You’re supposed to be down here and we’re supposed to be sitting there. And we’re not gonna shoot you… we’re just gonna shoot your boyfriend. We know he’s here.”
The camera then pans over to show cubs in the tree right next to where the mama bear is positioned. When you see baby bears – especially near their mother – you are better off keeping your distance. In fact, the National Park Service advises those visiting the outdoors to stay at least 100 yards away from bears and other animals that could be considered apex predators.
So was what this guy was doing smart? No, it was not. He should have seen the cubs and the mother and put as much distance between himself and the animals. But was what this guy was doing funny and entertaining? Yes, it was… though I obviously wouldn’t recommend doing it.
Just before the video cuts off, Taylor Red fits in one more condemning line directed at the mama bear, who didn’t really seem to be listening to the hunter’s monologue:
“You’re supposed to be down, we’re supposed to be up. Why can’t you understand this?”
