Army Football Reveals Incredible Uniforms For Navy Game Inspired By 101st Airborne Division

Fitting that the AP 18th-ranked Army Black Knights are undefeated this college football season, because they absolutely did not miss on this occasion either.

Despite a couple games still to play before their annual regular-season finale rivalry clash against Navy on December 14, the Black Knights dropped an awesome video of the custom uniforms they’ll be rocking that Saturday. They’re a tribute to the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

We got some archival footage and backstory of the division as players flexed and showed off their fresh-looking gridiron attire.

Founded in 1942, the 101st Airborne was pivotal to the efforts of Operation Overlord, aka D-Day on the beaches of Normandy, France. They earned the nickname the Screaming Eagles. So yeah, we’re talking about some of the baddest, most impactful warriors in the history of the world.

Much of the video focuses on the Battle of the Bulge — Siege of Bastogne in particular — and the adversity the 101st Airborne had to overcome in the face of being outnumbered. The opposing German forces asked the 101st to surrender. They refused, ultimately scoring a critical win for the Allied forces in Belgium.

Sometimes with how quickly life moves particularly nowadays with chronic online-ism, it can be hard to pause and reflect. Assembling an informative, educational package about a pivotal point in World War II inside a football uniform reveal is a pretty sweet combination you don’t see every day. It kind of affords that opportunity to realize how fortunate we are in modern society in so many ways, not to mention the immense sacrifices it took from veterans to ensure that good would prevail over evils of the Nazi Germany regime.

The NFL keeps going strong with their Salute to Service initiatives and honoring U.S. armed forces legacies around Veterans Day, and something like this that comes straight from the source of a college military academy is so unique, too. And we’ve got Thanksgiving and a full slate of NFL games coming up for that holiday. Such a big reason why us Americans get to enjoy those traditions is the actions of heroes like the Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

Back to the more football-centric side of it all, how about that “Rendezvous With Destiny” slogan on the back of the helmets, with the vintage audio playing in the background? That’s how you punctuate the end of a uniform reveal.

While Army is having an absolute dream season at a perfect 9-0, Navy is crushing it pretty hard as well with a 7-3 record to date. One of the Midshipmen’s defeats came at the hands of Notre Dame, who the Black Knights are about to face this Saturday in an epic showcase at Yankee Stadium. Massive football stakes for that matchup.

What makes the Army-Navy showdown so special, though, beyond the obvious that they’re service academies, is that no matter what the teams’ records are going in, there’s such pride, patriotism, and passion on display that you simply can’t replicate anywhere else in football. It’s a true one-of-one experience. You can find highlights of Army’s 17-11 win from last year below. Still some work to do for the Black Knights in the all-time series, which Navy leads with a 62-55-7 record.

PS: Shout out to Army quarterback Bryson Daily. No service academy player would enter the Heisman Trophy conversation nowadays, but what a monster 2024 campaign Daily is having.

Daily has tossed seven TDs to only one interception thus far. Throwing for that many scores is actually kind of impressive since Army seldom airs it out. The real show-stopper: Daily has piled up 1,062 rushing yards on 174 carries (6.1 average) with twenty-one touchdowns. Have a year, young man! Juggling all his obligations as a student and balling out that hard is well worthy of high praise.
