A great new one from Dwight Yoakam.
Today, he released a new song from his forthcoming album Brighter Days, which is slated to be released next week on November 15th.
Titled “I’ll Pay The Price,” Dwight wrote it with Jeffrey Steele, and it finds Dwight reflecting on a former flam and how he would give up anything or pay any price to get the girl back that he let go. The lyrics are simple and the production is classic Yoakam in terms of that Bakersville sound, and it’s another solid release from the forthcoming record:
“I’d pay in jewels
I’d pay in gold
Ten times the cost
For one last roll
Take any deal
Thrown by your hand
And pay the price
To hold it again
I’ll pay the price
For you and me
From the start of time
To the end of need
‘Til the last hope
We ever dream
I’ll pay the price
For you and me”
The album itself was written and recorded over the last three years, and includes 12 brand-new songs written/co-written by Yoakam, in addition to three covers of “Keeping On The Sunny Side” by the Carter Family, “Bound Away” by Cake, and “Time Between” by The Byrds.
It’s exciting for fans to be getting a new project from Yoakam, who hasn’t released a solo project in over eight years. He most recently released his Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… album in 2016, his first true bluegrass record (that also included a cover of “Purple Rain”).
I have also loved seeing him work so closely with Post Malone, who recently released his own hit country album F-1 Trillion earlier this year, and is featured on the lead single for Brighter Days on an awesome tune called “I Don’t Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom).”
They’re such a fun, unexpected pair, but obviously having Posty be part of this new album release will certainly help draw a lot of attention from a younger audience of fans who are clearly loving the country genre right now.
Brighter Days will be out everywhere next Friday, November 15th, and I can’t wait to hear it all. He’s off to a heck of a start… listen to “I’ll Pay The Price” here:
