Is it 1984 or 2024?
Today, Jake Worthington released a honky tonk classic that features guest vocals from Miranda Lambert, who was the perfect addition to give the song that extra little bit of Texas flair.
Written by Miranda along with Dean Dillon, Jessie Jo Dillon and Jesse Frasure, they penned it on a writers’ retreat earlier this year, and with the waling, melancholy steel guitar layered throughout, it really takes you back in time and makes you feel like you’re in a honky tonk in the 80’s.
Miranda says they came up with it on one of her first times writing the great Dean Dillon, who is a legenedary songwriter responsible for many of George Strait’s biggest hits, and as the song suggests, it was a cold and rainy day which inspired the whole concept:
“It was one of my first times ever writing with Dean Dillon, who is obviously a hero of ours… it was cold and rainy and sh*tty outside.”
She recalled Dean remarking on the weather whole outside taking a smoke break, saying, ‘hello, sh*tty day,’ and a song was born… as soon as it was finished, she knew she wanted Jake to cut it:
“And I was like, ‘can we write that?’ The first person I thought of was [Jake].”
Jake says it’s an “honor” to have such accomplished writers think of and write for him, and having Miranda sing on it of course made it all the more special:
“It’s tough to describe the honor of having songwriters I look up to consider my voice a vehicle for songs like this one. To have an artistic and creative force like Miranda join in, well that’s just a dream come true.”
It’s a pretty universal concept, and I think we’ve all been there in terms of having a bad day and feeling like the world is closing in on you, with nothing seeming to go your way.
The production is gorgeous and classic, and Miranda and Jake sound beautiful together… I think it’s another example of Miranda being in her honky tonk era, as is evidenced on her recent Postcards From Texas album, and I can’t get enough.
Do yourself a favor and check it out, it’s country as hell and one of the best new releases today:
