People Are Somehow Shocked To Find Out That Willie Nelson Is A Democrat After Endorsing Texas Senate Candidate

Have people just not been paying attention?

Willie Nelson has never really tried to keep his politics a secret. The living legend has a long history of supporting Democrats, and even filed a lawsuit back in 2004 to try to force the Texas Democratic Party to allow candidate Dennis Kucinich on the ballot.

While he endorsed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson in 2012, Willie said that he would “probably” vote for Barack Obama anyway, and he was an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump during his last administration.

Then there’s the obvious: Willie is a big supporter of marijuana and its legalization, an issue that typically aligns more with Democrat candidates.

So yeah, not sure how anybody could be surprised that Willie Nelson is a Democrat at this point. But somehow, they are.

Willie recently teamed up with Margo Price to endorse the Democrat candidates for Senate in their respective states and encourage others to get registered to vote. Willie urged voters down in Texas to support Colin Allred in his race against incumbent Senator Ted Cruz, while Margo asked her supporters in Tennessee to vote for Gloria Johnson in her longshot bid for Senate against Marsha Blackburn.

Again, not really unexpected. Unless you’re one of the folks on the internet who are somehow shocked to find out that Willie Nelson is a Democrat:

Of course there were plenty of tweets that mentioned the IRS, which famously came after Willie back in the ’90s and tried to auction off his property to settle an unpaid tax bill. The IRS union recently endorsed Kamala Harris in this election, so folks found it ironic that Willie was siding with the IRS despite his past battles with the organization.

And even country singer John Rich said it was “sad” to see, though it doesn’t sound like he was necessarily surprised by Willie’s endorsement.

And I mean, sure, it’s one thing to be disappointed when your favorite artist doesn’t agree with your politics. (Although I would also argue that we shouldn’t care who any celebrity endorses – do your own research and make up your own minds, regardless of who a famous singer or actor or whoever says you should vote for).

But how could ANYBODY be surprised that Willie is a Democrat at this point?
