Today is about man’s best friend.
Happy National Dog Day, ladies and gentlemen. While I personally think that today should be a national holiday and all dog moms & dads should be able to spend the day playing with their good boys & girls, sadly, the world doesn’t see today as that important.
And cat people, before you come at me up in arms about that opinion…who is walking their cat on a leash or taking them to the park? I rest my case.
While it would be a dream come true to spend a whole day with man’s best friend, the next best option is to blast music that celebrates and commemorates the loving relationship between humans and canines—and no one does songs about dogs better than country artists.
Over the years, when artists are not singing about falling in love or delivering a murder ballad, another popular topic for songwriting is the time spent with a dog or a story surrounding a special kind of canine, not to mention the sad songs about loving your companion and reminiscing on all the memories you shared.
Today is about the dogs, so instead of listening to your usual playlist of sad country songs while you’re at work, think of your pup (who is likely asleep in your bed at home) and pay homage to your best friend.
Dolly Parton- “Cracker Jack”
Blake Shelton- “Ol’ Red”
Chris Stapleton- “Maggie’s Song”
Dwight Yoakam- “I’ve Got A Dog”
Easton Corbin- “Raising Humans”
Tyler Childers- “Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven?”
Aaron Watson- “Best Friend”
Jameson Rodgers – “Good Dogs”
Colby Acuff- “Boy & A Bird Dog”
Matt Koziol- “Last Of The Old Dogs”
Channing Wilson- “Ol’ Dog”
Luke Bryan- “Little Boys Grow Up And Dogs Get Old”
Chris Young- “All Dogs Go To Heaven”
Mo Pitney- “Just A Dog”
The final song is more realistic about owning a dog because as much as we love them, there are going to be a few times when you are less than pleased with them for chewing a shoe, using the bathroom in the house, or, in Johnny Cash’s case, stealing his eggs.
Johnny Cash- “Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog”
