Adam Sandler Confirms That “Happy Gilmore 2” Is In The Works

Happy Gilmore could be coming back to the big screen sooner rather than later.

At least that’s how Adam Sandler made it sound during a recent interview on The Dan Patrick Show. The sports show host asked the actor and comedian if the rumors of a sequel to the 1996 classic, which were sourced from Shooter McGavin himself, were true.

Sandler was happy to talk about it, but he first had to tear into Christopher McDonald (who played Shooter in the film) for spilling the beans:

“He texted me after the fact, ‘By the way, that thing you told me not to talk about, I talked about it.’ Well that’s good. I did stand up, I did a comedy special, and a lot of my buddies came by and Shooter was one of them.

And I said, ‘Dude, we’ve been talking about a Happy 2 and we’re working on some stuff.’ That’s all I told Shooter, and said, ‘Don’t tell anybody.’ Then he kept it mostly private, he told a couple of DJs about it. They’re usually great at secrets.”

Though McDonald letting the cat out of the bag wasn’t ideal, the response that the news got was better than anyone could have imagined. Moviegoers are usually a little hesitant when reboots of old franchises are announced, but everyone and their brother seemed to be excited by the idea of Adam Sandler reprising his role as the running-start-golfer Happy Gilmore.

Dan Patrick and Sandler talked about the pleasant response that the news got for a bit, and then finally, the sports show host straight up asked the “Sandman” if the second installment really was in the works. Sandler excitedly responded with this:

“We’re working on it. Me and (Tim) Herlihy are diligently trying to make a good reason for everyone to come and watch and have a good time. Netflix is excited about it. We’re working on it, we’ve got some good ideas.”

Sandler went on to say that he’s currently working on the script for Happy Gilmore 2 in between shooting a movie, so the process is ongoing, but not full steam ahead. He made sure to point out that if they are going to do it, they’re going to do it right in hopes of not letting down the Happy Gilmore franchise.

The Happy Gilmore actor also added that the losses of Bob Barker (who played himself), Carl Weathers (who played Chubbs), and Joe Flaherty (who played the guy that yelled “jackass”) are irreplaceable heading into the sequel, and that all of those roles would be honored in some way. It’s clear that Sandler and everyone involved are working hard to make a second installment that not only adds to the Gilmore-McGavin universe, but also honors the 90’s classic.

Sandler is going to inspire another generation of people to go out to the golf course and dangerously run up to golf balls to hit them, isn’t he?

While we all wait for more news about the anticipated sequel, I guess we can pass the time by watching some of best scenes from the original:
